Oooohhhh lovely warm, soft, fluffy towels for you... That's the best thing about a tumble drier.

BikeRunSki · 18/11/2011 08:07

I bought my first about 3 weeks ago. It's ace.

Catsmamma · 18/11/2011 08:10

remember to fold stuff up when it's warm and you may never need to iron a thing ever again

lazy strumpet with quite low standards

halcyondays · 18/11/2011 19:06

I've ordered one, it should be here in a couple of weeks. I'm ridiculously excited about it. I'm looking forward to getting a bit of space back instead if having big aires out all the time and to having fluffy towels instead of cardboardy ones. Must admit I never iron anything anyway.

jasminerice · 18/11/2011 19:09

I've gone back to airers from the tumble drier to save on electricity!

betterwhenthesunshines · 19/11/2011 13:19

not very good for the electricity bill or the environment though is it?

What's wrong with just hanging stuff up to dry?

southeastastra · 19/11/2011 13:21

hanging it where? have had 20 years of drying on radiators, that isn't very environmentally friendly either is it you mis Grin

outside on a line in the summer and inside on a rail / clothes rack in the winter. We hang ours near to the boiler / hot water tank.

OK you may not have space in the same place but I'm always just a bit gobsmacked at people using dryers if there's an alternative which is free.

southeastastra · 19/11/2011 15:43

i'll still use outside and the airing cupboard, it's just handy for larger things that's all - i won't use in instead of using what i do now. doubt i will use in it summer!

I dry as much as I can on airers / outside and then finish them off in the drier - that way it saves energy but you benefit from the softness and if you fold quick you don't need to iron most stuff

PattySimcox · 19/11/2011 17:42

*dryer not drier [pedant]

Catsmamma · 19/11/2011 17:49

We haven't the option of outside....far NE of Scotland, more or less from October to March

This week in particular has been very grim, not really light till 9 am, getting dark by 3.30 (pitch black at 4.30 one day!) It's just an utter waste of time to drag the laundry from the machine onto the line!

AND drying laundry on rads and airers is very bad for increasing the damp in houses. Plus despite all this dank weather it's not cold enough to warrant the heating so that counterbalances the dryer usage imo.

halcyondays · 20/11/2011 11:23

I will still hang things outside when the weather is good, but it's impossible to dry things in the winter and even in spring and summer there are lot of wet days (I'm in NI) so I have to have two big airers up permanently as well as hanging towels over the side of a playpen and I've found myself having to put the heat on purely to dry clothes. That's not very environmentally friendly and it's not cheap either. And, yes, it is making the house damp.

southeastastra · 20/11/2011 11:26

i've used mine alot now. it's a condenser and i am amazed at how much water gets collected in the drawer thingy. that must have been floating around the house all these years, now wonder we had condensation everywhere!

you will love it halcyondays and our clothes dry so much quicker in the dryer!

halcyondays · 20/11/2011 11:37

I can't wait until mine arrives southeast. We used to have a dryer years ago but we got rid of it when we moved house because it was a vented one and we had nowhere for it to go without having to start drilling holes in the wall, but there were only the two of us then so we didn't generate so much laundry. So we're getting a condenser one and it's an A rated one so hopefully won't be as bad for our electric bill.

laurenamium · 20/11/2011 15:27

My very first one is being delivered tomorrow Grin

As far as environment goes, I have to have the dehumidifier on for AGES when I dry clothes inside so it's probably going to work out better for me to have a dryer to use in the winter, I'll be hanging out in the summer Grin

Do you just pop the clothes in? Or do I need some kind of dryer ball/ cloth that goes in with them? Extreme dryer novice!
