Hi,

Can any of you please tell me how to successfully clean the washing powder drawer on the washing machine?! Whatever I do it's so diddly and awkward it's never clean!!

I'm getting a lovely gas hob kettle, how do I clean it and de-scale it?!

Thankyou!!

Hmmm not sure about the kettle, you can buy descaler but i'm sure there's a cheaper way to do it, expect someone else will know....

I don't find my machine drawer too fiddly, i just dunk it in a bowl of warm water and give it a good rub round with a cloth. If yours has got any awkward nooks and crannies how about a teapot spout brush?

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/11/2011 15:14

The powder drawer can go in a dishwasher on a low cycle.

NoTeaForMe · 17/11/2011 17:34

Ha, see I haven't yet figured put that I can take the drawer out of the machine!!

Hmm, will try that!!

Thanks

The kettle you can clean with normal soapy water. To descale you can buy a cleaner or just use vinegar!

Seona1973 · 17/11/2011 18:18

I have to use a bit of force to pull out the dispenser drawer and then I wash it in the sink. The bit where the drawer goes is normally manky too so I use a toothbrush and scouring sponge to get all the mouldy bits off.

if you divulge the make and model of the washer, someone will know. Have you looked in the instruction book?

NoTeaForMe · 17/11/2011 18:51

I don't have the instruction book for the washing machine as we bought it off the people we bought the house from...

It's a hotpoint WF865 1600spin if anyone knows!

Will our tea not taste of vinegar oreocrumbs ? what do you do?

Thankyou all!

If this is you machine then you should have a drawer release latch at the back of the drawer.

Karbea · 17/11/2011 19:19

tea you have to rinse afterwards :)

pollyblue · 17/11/2011 19:29

Yep, there should be a drawer release tab or latch somewhere around the drawer...........no wonder you were having trouble trying to clean it in the machine! Grin

NoTeaForMe · 17/11/2011 21:26

Blush can't believe I didn't know you could take the drawer out!!

you will probably find congealed soap and fabsoft in the drawer aperture. Scrub it out with a nylon brush, and use kitchen cleaner with bleach to kill the black mould. Remember the "ceiling" of the slot.

MynameisnotEarl · 17/11/2011 21:37

For washing machine drawer, I fill the kitchen sink with water and a good few squirts of bleach. Leave to soak then loosen any stubborn gunge with a toothbrush.

Descale kettle by soaking inside with vinegar (brown is cheap and you can reuse it several times) until shiny, then boil clean water in it once or twice till you can't smell the vinegar.

I find it hard to clean the outside of my stove top kettle - it always has sticky marks on it. I'd appreciate any suggestions to de-grease it.

PigletJohn · 17/11/2011 22:23

"stove top kettle"

green scourer and all-purpose cleaner or WUL.

Is it brushed stainless, enamel, or what?

MynameisnotEarl · 17/11/2011 23:31

It's this one Piglet. Seems quite sturdy as I've already tried green scourer & wul but that didn't get the grease spots off.

PigletJohn · 17/11/2011 23:44

it looks like anodised aluminium to me.

I had assumed that the marks were splatter and mist of cooking fat. It oxidies with heat and exposure to air and turns to a sort of varnish.

Aluminium is quite a soft metal. The anodising layer is hard but porous, so the coloured dye soaks in, then is usually lacquered. I don't know if the lacquer is heat proof. I wonder if the stains have soaked into the porous layer?

If you have tried scourer and WUL I don't know. You could try white spirit on a tiny area in case it is a cooking fat mark.

Or are the marks whitish like lime watermarks?

MynameisnotEarl · 18/11/2011 07:49

I manage to get rid of the hard water marks with vinegar Piglet, it's the splatter marks that are hard to shift. I'll try a little white spirit, thank you.

Sorry for the hijack OP.
