Carpet cleaner made carpet stinky

I've cleaned my carpets myself in the past but this time I was receommended a carpet cleaner and I thought it a good idea, since it's difficult to find the time to clean carpets with 3 children.

The carpets were ok, but the next day they started to smell. I have gone over the smelly bits (seems to be the high traffic areas) with my small Bissell cleaner and even sprayed with Febreeze but the smell is still there.
the carpet cleaner says it must be a reaction from last time I cleaned my carpets with the rugdoctor as he uses deodourised products....

Anyone know? Or any tips on what to do?

Its happened to me too. The smell lasted for a couple of days then disappeared.

How long ago did you have them cleaned? This has happened to me too and the smell disappeared after a few days.

Same here-it smelt like wet dogs for about 2 days, then it was fine.

It was over a week ago now, but then I have tried to re clean it so maybe that's made it last longer...?

Are they completely dry now?

PigletJohn · 17/11/2011 21:52

The smell will have been because they were damp. Sucking more and opening the windows helps. Putting the heating on doesn't dry carpets.

The carpets still stink. Don't know why but I think I will have to try and clean them again...

how dry are they?

Have you got a dog?

hastingsmum · 23/11/2011 14:44

lol piglet, no dog, just 3 kids. The carpet has felt dry since the day it was cleaned. Do you mean it can take this long for a carpet to dry out properly?

the underlay will take a very long time to dry, if it gets wet.

I had a burst pipe and used a wet-and-dry vac to get the water out of the carpets, but if you sat on the stairs, a wet patch came up, and it was still damp when chucked in the skip a couple of weeks later. IIRC it was that green waffle rubber foam stuff.
