Vacuum serviced?!

Has anyone had their vacuum serviced, and if so, was it worth doing, and how much did it cost?

My Miele Cat and Dog is shit these days :/ was about to buy a new (different) one, but everyone says they are the best when you have pets. So now I'm wondering why mine isn't that great?

Hoovering involves a lot of physical effort just to get up bits off the carpet :/ It gets the pet hairs up fine, but nothing else!! I remember when I first had it, the suction was great. Its only 2.5 years old, so really, is a service the answer?!!

I had mine serviced at our local Miele dealer. It cost me less than £40 including new filters and 4 bags and made a huge difference. If I'd used the Miele website to arrange it, it would have cost twice that much, so beware!

Had one serviced years ago - Electrolux- for £20, and it worked better than new, most impressed. Tried to arrange similar recently but assistant pointed out that minimum fee was £40, parts extra and they were selling machines o f same power for £30, which is what I bought. Tried to donate old machine to green charity specialising in renovation and resales, but was refused as no repair-man available - sad, but good luck with yours.

Have you replaced the filter?

TheDetective · 14/11/2011 09:47

I think it has been - I'd have to check with DP, he's in charge of changing things lol!

I change my Miele on every time the bag gates changed, there's a filter with each bag.

Miele are usually very good, you need to get into the habit of changing all the filters. Some of them have three. If you are very mean frugal like me you can wash the plastic ones and use them again (though if you have athsmatics I expect you should always have a new final one) and swap them over whenever you change the bag. You should get a new set of filters in every packet of bags. Animal hairs will clog them. Fine dust will clog the bag.

Clean or new filters also prevent it smelling of dog. You can sponge out the cavity where the bag goes and that will also help.

There is a faint chance something might be stuck in the head or tubes, so check that, and that you have not got a leak in the hose especially where it joins a rigid part. I expect you've already checked that the suction is set to max, and if it has a suction bleed on the handle, it is closed. Look at the instruction manual if you can find it. Ours is able to blow down the hose to clear it, and has an indicator that lights when the suction is clogged.

I just managed to service it myself. :D Money saved, job done!

I took apart the turbo floorhead, and got every last bit of sludge, and hair (oh, the hair!!) out, put it all back together. New filters etc...

Can't say its improved its performance, but it definitely smells less! However I am begining to suspect my carpet is just shit - its practically worn down. Might try it in someone elses house and see if its better!!
