Anyone with a Hotpoint washer/dryer?

VirgoGrr · 10/11/2011 15:09

Have an inherited Hotpoint machine that came with the house - don't like it - might have to accidentally break it, if it isn't already. Grin

Have always had a separate washing machine and dryer, so I'm a bit new to this washer/dryer thing.

It's taking ages to dry/just not drying/taking hours to dry some underwear/stopping and display flashing. Is it just knackered or is there a filter somewhere to clean out?

My previous tumble driers have had fluff filters that would affect the drying ability if they hadn't been cleaned out. Can't seem to find anything on this one that looks like a filter. There's an amount of wet fluff stuck to the door after a drying cycle.

Need to get this sorted out ASAP. Driving me mad having to dry clothes on radiators.

Hi, I'd try and find an online manual for it (if you don't have the manual) and see if it gives you any clues in there.
Never had a washer/dryer all in one, always had seperates.
Hope that helps.

I have had a look online for a manual for the washer and the dishwasher (also Hotpoint) , however, typically there isn't one on there for either one.

Just thought I'd see if anyone else had one before I head into the 7th circle of hell which is domestic appliance customer service on the phone.

I have heard that washer dryers are crap, but I can't believe that this is how they're normally supposed to work. Not fit for purpose IMO.

Are you making sure you only try to dry about half a wash-load at a time? They won't do more than that, generally.

I used to have a Hotpoint one, but tbh it wasn't that reliable, and I replaced it with a Zanussi when it died. It didn't have a filter - the fluff goes out with the cooling water, it's not like a drier which uses air and has to filter the fluff out of it.

When its doing the drying, is there any heat? You could try pausing it in mid-cycle - the heater element stopped working on mine, and it would quite cheerfully turn the clothes around in cold air for ages.....

workshy · 10/11/2011 16:33

you need to take at least half the load out before drying -they are poo

gazzalw · 10/11/2011 16:35

We had one and it died after about 3 years of use. When we had it replaced with a John Lewis's own brand one we were told that Hotpoint ones are Candy ones in disguise which explained a lot...

I worked out straight away that I couldn't put as much in this as in my drier. I've experimented with smaller and smaller loads. Still taking forever. i.e. 10 pairs of knickers will be on a high heat cycle for 2 hours and still not be dry.

It seems to be producing heat because the counter top above it gets very warm when it on for a long time. If you stop it mid cycle, it will be hot inside.

I think the stopping and flashing display thing happens when I've repeated a cycle straight away because the washing isn't dry. Machine might be overheating, which worries me a bit. Don't think I'd have it on while I'm out.

This is a rented house which comes with appliances, otherwise I'd have my lovely Bosch washer and dryer (which are 150 miles away) in here like a shot.

If it's hot, and not drying even that much, then I'd guess its not blowing any air round the actual drum - that would explain it being very hot and complaining when you try to run another cycle.

I'm not sure what the position is about appliances when you're renting, but it sounds like it needs to be looked at properly by an engineer.

VirgoGrr · 10/11/2011 16:57

Thanks for your help everyone.

Right then washer dryer people, are we agreed that this machine sounds like it has got Something Wrong With It? Not just me having high expectations of drying capabilities?

If that's a yes, I'll get someone to have a look at it. Just expecting a bit of a performance when you have to get the letting agent to sort it out.

With my old one, when it was still working, it would have dried half a wash-load in about an hour and a half. A handful of things would be dry in 20-30 minutes. It sounds like yours really isn't managing even the low expectations I'd have of a washer-drier. They don't compare with a full drier, tis true, but they should still dry things adequately.

So yes I think you need someone to come look!

wheredidiputit · 10/11/2011 17:27

I have one.

But to be honest i don't tend to use the dryer unless necessary. I also tend to do the extra spin then use an airer for 24 hrs and only finish in the dryer.

I gave using it to dry straight from washing as it takes for ever.

Seona1973 · 10/11/2011 18:14

I only use my dryer bit in emergencies (major pee/puke incidents, etc) as it isnt that great. When I do use it I don't dry the clothes fully and hang them up to finish drying

UterusUterusGhali · 11/11/2011 14:00

I have one and it's a bunch of arse IMO.

Do you have the one with numbers & pictures on the dial eg an iron, a cupboard?

I never have the tumbly come on immediately after a wash-will not work.
Also never use the picture settings.

Wash, take half out, set using the number of minutes required.

VirgoGrr · 14/11/2011 13:13

I love your name UterusUterusGhali. Grin at bunch of arse. That just about sums it up.

Doesn't have pictures, but does have iron/cupboard/something else setting. Can have sensor or timed dry. Neither seems very effective. Have only tried cupboard setting as imagine anything less would be dripping wet.

Have given up on it and am using airer in spare room now. Welcome to the 21st century. Wink

Ooh I want one of those ceiling airers but have nowhere to put it.

I hang my shirts etc on hangers in the airing cupboard too, which saves on ironing a bit. Result.

JingleAllTheSoddingWay · 16/11/2011 09:20

I have one and it's fabulous.

We didn't have space for separates & tbh I don't use the tumble dryer very much anyway so it would've been taking up space.

This way I have my washing machine but the tumble dryer is there for "emergencies"

I've had no problems with mine at all. I can dry a full load in 2hrs 20mins (I think the setting is called "Iron Dry") and never had a problem with clothes still coming out wet so it does sound like yours is broken.

(Plus the child lock feature is brilliant Grin )

Mudeford · 02/12/2016 21:24

I've just bought a new Hotpoint washer/dryer. After using the dryer for the first time, my next wash resulted in all the clothes coming out covered in tiny flecks/bits that look as though they came from the garments previously dried. Does anyone else have this problem? is there a filter anywhere that has to be cleaned after the dryer cycle?

PassTheSatsumas · 03/12/2016 19:03

That's strange! I have one but rarely use the drier (because it's not v good and I think driers eat clothes)
Not had this problem but do find it's better to take some clothes out. I also often get things 80% dry then finish on hangers - they are not as good as a tumble drier but meet my needs
