Which dishwasher?!

Can anyone recommend a good, free standing, not-too-expensive dishwasher please? The one I'm replacing is about 85 x 60 x 60cm so ideally need something the same size (so not a slimline/compact model).

Or, if you have access to Which to just tell me what they think then all the better!

Also any recommendations on stockists? Keep hearing more and more bad things about John Lewis these days and have also been warned they don't unplumb old dishwashers.

Thanks

We just got this one. It wasn't listed in Which - they have some trouble keeping up with the number of models out there.

On the plus side for the one we got - it is very quiet (much quieter than the kettle), it is A++ energy rated, it has a child lock, stuff is coming out very clean and it dries much better than our previous one. The blue light inside looks cool, but is not really a very good light. The eco setting takes nearly 3 hours. I don't know what the non-eco setting takes.

We did use John Lewis. I don't think that unplumbing and plumbing in a new dishwasher is very difficult, but DH did it, so I can hardly talk from experience. At least they take the old one away for you and you get a 5 year guarantee.

Bosch usually come out best in the "ordinary price" ranges, with Siemens the same thing with a different badge on, and Miele which is the upmarket badge for those who can afford it.

Sometimes you can get last year's model at a reduced price, which is fine if it is a good one. It should last at least 10 years so you will not notice if it is the latest model after a while. I got a last-years Siemens from JL a couple of months back but they have all gone now.

The prices for mass-market large appliances seem to cluster around £400, some rather more, some rather less.

John Lewis are very good for service, and include a 2-year guarantee (other retailers may only give 1 year).

Don't be tempted to pay extra for a model which has more programmes, you will only ever use about two of them.

Built-in ones are usually more expensive, and more trouble to fit or remove.

Looking at "which" online today, the lowest price Best Buy Bosch, availalable between about £400 and £500, are
Bosch
SMS65E12GB Exxcel

Bosch
SMS63E12GB

Siemens
iQ300 SN26M230GB

You can look at "Which" in your local library.

we have a Bosch Logixx SMS69L02 that is very quiet and seems to do its job well. It also has a cutlery tray at the top rather than a basket in the bottom level and that frees up space in the bottom rack. We paid just under £500 for it.

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/11/2011 19:38

Bosch all the way, low running costs and water consumption.

Always go for the logixx with the top cutlery tray, its the one still made in germany. I looked at the classixx but it was flimsy by comparison.

If you cant stretch to bosch, go for the one with the lowest water/power consumption. Once you have paid for the machine thats it but the utility bills will only rise so I think its best to look ahead re running costs. I think beko come out quite well iirc.

We used appliancesonline.co.uk and they delivered for free and took all the packaging away. Very cheap too! saved £70 compared to house of fraser. And we got a 4 year warranty.

Brilliant. Thanks for all that info. Will start working through it.

Thanks also for tip of looking at Which in the library - I wouldn't have thought of that.

very handy £75 trade-in on that Siemens. I got Siemens FF in the summer from JL, and they took away my old beer fridge that I would have had to the tip otherwise, and knocked off £50. If you are strong you could probably Freegle and get someone's old dishwasher home in the boot of your car for that trade-in discount.
