damaged my leather sofa!! what can i do???

we bought our brown leather sofa 2 years ago and recently i have noticed small bits of the surface have come away showing the lighter leather underneath. i wasn't too worried as it doesn't look too bad and was where buttons had scraped it on jeans etc.

however!!! today i had my laptop on the arm and went to put it away. i lifted and a huge piece of leather is stuck to the bottom of the laptop!!!! the laptop isn't hot, but is warm, and i don't think the arm was wet or sticky. The piece missing is just a bit bigger than a 50p piece and i'm so upset!! the newly exposed layer of leather is not damaged but is a much lighter colour and i don't know what to do!!! What the hell caused it??????

i think it may be the leather itself, or the quality of it. At 2 years old I would contact company who sold it you and get it looked at. My old leather sofa only faded in worn areas after about 4 years but did not de laminate or lift, sounds pretty bad.

Does anyone have any advice how I can disguise the patch please?

I think your sofa is coated leather, not tanned. Essentially they paint it.

I would go mad at them and demand they fix it for free, they should paint that patch for you. It is not unreasonable to put a laptop on a sofa as it is a hardworking piece of furniture.

We took a sofa back to dfs once and plonked it in the store in front of all the customers to show them what had happened to it.

Reader, they replaced a whole suite.

on that recommendation my husband decided to go see them tomorrow. so i dug out the original paperwork to take with him and guess what???

it says 5 year leather cover on it £105. now we didn't pay for it but it is listed on the bill so we are assuming they have thrown this in for free. Reading the back it seems we are entitled to get it fixed so we've taken loads of pics.

i will report back!!

We had the damage insurance for our leather suite and recently had reason to claim - I'd put a nail vanish remover pad down on it, d'oh! I'd heard a few horror stories about claiming but although it took them a couple of weeks to get back to us after we emailed the claim, once they did they were quite prompt in getting it sorted.

They do 'paint' the damage with a matching colour. What the guy did say is that you can order the paint yourself online, its called Gliptone, and you can either send them a sample to colour match, or send them the retailer, date of purchase and shade, and they will match for you to do touch ups yourself. Just for you to consider if they tell you you aren't covered after all.

just checked the website at DFS and they are still selling it and it says 100% real leather so i don't think it is that bicast stuff bubbles4 - even though it does sound like it......

I would be tempted to print off the page from the DFS website,just in case you need it at a later date

I am having a similar problem with my sofa. We only bought ours about 2 years ago and I think it was in a sale. From Harveys. Ours has split quite a lot.
Do you think we may be able to get anything done about it?
I don't think ours is proper leather as it wasn't too expensive.
I am quite Angry about it.

so he is back!
apparently we are NOT covered, they maintain they NEVER give this cover away for free and it was written on as a note.
however, they agree that it should never have happened and as a one-off goodwill gesture they are sending someone out to repaint the patch. it was a bit of a stand-off by all accounts but they gave way once it was pointed out that we are actually happy with the sofa, just expected it to last longer and they gave in.
i will now invest in a kit to repaint ourselves in future as i can see it happening again......

but at least we are getting it fixed for now Smile

I know I'm reviving a very old thread, but exactly the same thing has just happened to my (not new) leather sofa! My daughter had a hot plate on the arm and it stuck and when I lifted it up, has taken a 10p sized piece of leather with it. I am so upset, I could cry! Is there anything I can colour the piece in with?? It is so obvious :(

We had a similar problem and we used this

They can colour match to DFS colours and other colours. Give them a ring they are helpful.

Same issue here. I Googled it and found this thread. Our sofas are 3 years old and it's happened. They're not excellent quality granted as they're coated leather Sad so I'll check out some the suggestions on the thread. Thanks!
