What is this white lumpy stuff in my washing machine?

It doesn't happen on every wash but it is getting more frequent. I will open the door and the clothes are covered in a white lumpy substance, I just pop it back on a rinse and that gets rid of it. What is it and what can I do to get rid of it?
I've tried putting it through a cycle empty to clean it and I've checked the filter at the bottom of the machine. It's a washer dryer but I doN t use the dryer as its broken. Any ideas?

Two things it could be - tissues left in pockets, or washing powder that hasn't dissolved properly, jen

Thanks, it's not tissues. I have. Ive noticed it since washing at 30 degrees whether that has anything to do with it?

Are you over filling your machine?

I used to get that if I had crammed stuff in and the washing powder hadn't dissolved properly.

Try filling washing machine 2/3 full at the max, see if that helps, if you overfill washer then washing powder won't disolve properly, also try using not as much washing powder, i use a liquid for colours as i've had this myself.
Hope that helps, let us know how you get on.

Are you using the short cycle button? Mine has 3 options, intensive wash, normal wash and quick wash for each cycle temp.

I use 3 table spoons of powder and 3 of soda crystals for each wash.

I don't overfill anymore, used to though, and I use liquid not powder. I'm going to try the White vinegar in it to see if that cleans it up.

How about trying some powder detergent to see if it makes a difference? Liquids are really not very good in comparison to powders.

Thankyou I will, and thanks for all your replies Smile

It will most likely be caused by a combination of liquid detergent and low temp washes. Liquid detergents don't contain the levels of bleach that powders do. A combination of hot water and the ingredients in a powder is necessary to break down the dirt enough to be drained out with the water, without that combo you start to get a residue buildup. Regular maintenance washes (with an empty washer) at the hottest temp possible using a good quality bio powder will help.
