Does anyone know what could be causing this and if so, what to do about it?

TIA for any ideas

does the mashine smell as well?

what can help is running an empty hot wash with soda crystals.
for clothes

  • use less detegent that recommrnded on the pack (half is usually enough)
  • don't use conditioner, or only very little
  • use a cup full of white vinegar in the conditioner compartment for the most smelly stuff
  • put a little soda crystals into the drum with every wash

zzzzz most often a buildup of sludge composed of detergent or powder, fabsoft, and grease

This is especially copmmon if you do lots of cool washes or are overgenerous with the detergent.

Do a MAX HOT wash with old cotton towels (preferably white) and NO POWDER. See if it foams up. If so, the very hot water is washing away the sludge.

Also take out the powder/dertergent drawer, it will probbaly have sludge and black mould in it. Scrub it with a nylon brush and hot water. Also clean the slot that the drawer slides into. kitchen spray with bleach and a nylon washing-up brush.

Scrub round the rubber door-seal especially the grooves and channels that you can get your finger in

Another common cause is rotting fluff and socks in the pump filter. Take the filter out and clean it. The instructions are in that booklet you received when you bought the machine and haven't looked at since.

There is a much less common problem with incorrect plumbing of the waste pipe allowing dirty water from the sink drain to get into the washer, but you willl notice it slowly filling up with dirty water and tea leaves when you pull the plug out.

If you're using liquid detergent this can cause a build up of gunk in your machine as it doesn't contain bleaching agents in the same quantities as powdered detergents. The bleach helps keep the machine clean and the powder doesn't gunk up in the same way as liquid.

What mausyfledermaus said too.

I just checked and the machine does smell. Thanks very much to you all for taking the time to reply. I'm going to try all suggestions.

Hi, I would lift soap drawer out and clean it in the sink. Check to see if there is any black mould in the water jets ( where the water comes from ), if there is clean with a mould/mildew spray and a toothbrush. Next, put the soap drawer back in and have a look at the plastic rubber just on the inside of the washing machine, give that a good clean , make sure nothing is harbouring in there. Next i would put a cup of white vinegar in the drum of the washing machine and put it on the hottest wash there is - empty. This will give it a good clean through.
Voila!
I would try a wash and use a nice faric conditioner and hopefully job should be a goodun! Hope that helps.

Thanks to you too Jenni. I hadn't even noticed that my washing machine had a 95 degree cycle until I read these messages!

Inspired by this thread I have done a cycle at 90 with soda crystals; degunked the seals and the drawer and its housing with white vinegar and am now running another cycle with soda crystals and white vinegar in the conditioner drawer.

Top tip for degunking small jets:a cocktail stick.
