if so, how big is it? where is it and any recommendations?
we are buying a new home and im planning one. my mum used to have one (about 4.5 sqm) and it was great...
im wondering if i could do with something smaller and where best to place it (near kitchen or bathroom)

We have an upstairs laundry room - big enough for washing machine/ dryer / laundry basket / ironing board etc. It is fantastic.

we have one it's the same size as a garage. It is a great space but it's not off the kitchen and I wish it was but hey ho.

Boss Boggle - won't save you massive amounts but make sure your washing machine and tumble dryer are switched off at the wall when not in use.

Feeling very smug as my very ordinary Brussels townhouse has a laundry room that I love, love, love!! Like many Belgian houses it has a fully functioning cellar and mine has a playroom, a coal cellar (unused - but great storage!), an original stone wine cellar - built under the back stairs and a laundry room. My kitchen is quite small but my laundry room has a run of cupboards and a sink in it so it holds the overflow of all my kitchen stuff. Although my house is quite modest (3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom) and a tiny city garden, I do love my cellar!

SandstoneCat - are you on our Belgian MNetter list?

tostaky · 05/11/2011 21:18

So jealous!!! We are in London so i want to make it as small as poss, but i know i still need some space.... And it would need to double as utility room/storage. At the moment i use DP's office and he always moans about it...
not too fussed about ironing in it as my cleaner usually irons for us everything in one go and she can just do that in the living room - i dont mind.
Good idea to have a linen closet in there. and an airer on the ceiling (i guess it is not too difficult to put clothes on it?) i will need to investigate...!!

I have one, and I wouldn't be without it. A laundry room was on my 'must have' list when we were choosing a new house last year. I love bring able to clsoe the door on the noise of the washer and dryer, and the sight of the clothes horses full of wet washing.

its small-ish - has a washine machine, tumble dryer and sink going down one wall on the left as you walk in. Outside door in front of you. Massive tank and boiler in a built in cupboard on the right. Wall space next to that to lean hoover, ironing board, mop and bucket and clothes horses next to that. I also keep DS' easel and outdoor things like wellies in there too.

You could iron in there, and my cleaner says she prefers to, but it is a bit of a squeeze.

takeonboard · 07/11/2011 13:21

Mine is my favourite room! More of a glorified cupboard really, but as well as the washing machine it houses the hoover, ironing board, ladders, mop bucket and all DIY stuff - all the ugly stuff really. No room to iron in there but due to huge hot water tank which throws out loads of heat I hang wet laundry from a ceiling pully thingy and it dries in a few hours towels and all.

We are in London, space is an issue but it is so well designed it is the room that most justifies its space and I would definitely give over kitchen space for a laundry room any day

newpup · 07/11/2011 14:28

I love mine! Washing machine, tumble dryer, sink for hand washing and space for drying/airing washing. Also a great place to leave the dog when she is wet until she has dried out!

putyourhatonsweetie · 07/11/2011 19:51

ooh forgot to say - the most useful thing about mine is that it has a door to the backyard - so my outside line is just there. Cuts down on a lot of the work (though I do have a slightly strange house with many doors so it might not be that useful to have the laundry roon as the back room if you only have one front, one back door...

goingmadinthecountry · 08/11/2011 08:41

I have a utility room but dh and ds leave bike parts etc in the sink and the dog brings in mud so I have no desire to iron or hang clothes there. Have to clean floor far too often and it doesn't smell of clean, sadly.

If I designed my own home, would have one upstairs and it would be a haven of cleanness.
