What's the best smelling washing powder/ fabric softener?

Hi
My clothes never smell nice whenever I wash them and it is beginning to bug me. I often smell other people's clothes and think how lovely they smell. Ours either have no smell at all or else slightly damp from being dried over the clothes horse.
Which brands should I buy to get that
wonderful smell?
I normally use persil washing liquid, as was getting powder marks with powder, and I stopped using own brand due to no smell.

Can you help?!

I have a utility room, tumble drier is stacked on top of washing machine and I have a larder cupboard to the side. It is only 1.5m in length.

But I have a wardrobe pole high up (modern house so not that high) that runs parallel to the washing machine, goes from one wall to the opposite wall.

I use Persil bio and Comfort Pure softner and any stuff that can't be tumbled like DH's shirts/t-shirts & trousers I hang on this rail on hangers. I also have one of those multi peg hangers for socks which lives on the rail and I clip my bras on it. I clip DH's trousers up by the waistband but open it out to let air in.

I wash clothes first thing in the morning, hang them up before school run and put them in the tumble drier. Heat from tumble drier dries clothes before I cook tea. so they get taken down and put in ironing pile to be hopefully ironed next day.

Always smell lovely and fresh even after ironing. Asda washing powder smells very strong and the smell lasts ages.

I'll be no help whatsoever in answering your question as I have an oversensitive nose to smells so my washing can't smell at all or else my nose starts twitching and eyes streaming - I even have trouble walking down the laundry products aisle in the supermarket!!

My DD stayed with my mum for a few days and her clothes got washed whilst she was there but I'm having to redo them to get rid of the "smell" they have Blush

AmberLeaf · 05/11/2011 09:57

I change mine every now and then as I find I get used to the smell and dont notice it as much.

My favs are Lenor blue or yellow, Comfort blue or yellow and sometimes Lenor gold orchid or whatever it is, that is lovely but I save it for best!

Washing powder/liquid I like Daz, Persil, Surf tropical something or other.

AmberLeaf Grin at saving Gold Orchid for best !

AmberLeaf · 05/11/2011 21:05

Grin well, you know what I mean!

Its got such a luxurious smell, Its only fitting it be saved for best!

countessbabycham · 05/11/2011 21:10

I slip a little bit extra in when I wash my bedding,to treat myself....

AmberLeaf · 05/11/2011 21:12

Ok when I say best I mean lingerie

mankymink · 05/11/2011 21:19

Lenor Orange Blossom fabric softener smells absolutely gorgeous, not very orangey at all I don't think but subtle and fresh. Like really nice shampoo. Highly recommend it!

stressheaderic · 05/11/2011 21:25

We're still using Fairy non-bio due to DD's eczema and sensitive skin, boring and scentless.

I might start washing her clothes separately so I can get back to my favourite, Surf Tropical and Blue Comfort.

Just done all our bedding tonight in that, and managed to line-dry it this afternoon - can't wait to get into bed tonight!

If you sprinkle essential oil drops (esp jasmine) on a damp cotton cloth and put it in the drier clothes smell really fragrant. Alas I no longer have a drier and my clothes smell a bit whiffy if i leave them too long on the clothes horse these days!

countessbabycham · 05/11/2011 22:02

Maybee I really like that idea! I'm going to try that tomorrow although I only have lavender oil. Thanks for the tip!

Every so often if I have a really dirty washload I dilute some tea tree oil and put it in the fabric conditioner section - probably find out thats bad for my machine though as it is an oil after all.Your idea sounds much better.

MyBaby1day · 17/11/2011 07:08

M&S fabric conditioners smell nice, i've just used the blue one but i have a lavender one too!. Surf tropical, have you tried that one?, i had a sample of that and it worked!!, because i bought it!! Wink. I think i must try Lenor Gold Orchid now though!!.

I find that using powder tablets rather than powder itself makes my clothes smell lovely; I'm in a soft water area and wash 3-4 times a week so only ever need 1 tablet at a time.

It also means that I usually have two packs on the go - bio for towels, bedding and normal clothes and non-bio for DS's stuff and underwear.

I have also been known to use Lenor with Fabreeze fabric conditioner for some of DH's work shirts if he's had a pongy stressful day.

nomorecake · 18/11/2011 10:48

i do the same. non bio for kids. and bold (or whats on offer!) for us.
I think we're used to the smell of our clothes, but kids always smell lovely when wearing fresh clothes.

Elliemae77 · 19/11/2011 14:11

I bought Bold 2-in-1 with a touch of Lenor a few weeks ago and I'm now completely addicted to it. So far they've been on an offer at Asda Online but I'm afraid I'd probably still buy them at full price as my clothes smell sooo lovely.

Home bargains liquid washing with fairy fabric softener is great. The clothes need less ironing too.

PavlovtheCat · 04/02/2012 07:59

Fairy

lilmamma · 04/02/2012 19:31

I use the purple or yellow lenor or comfort, iam heavy handed and use about 3-4 cap fulls, but my laundry stays smelling lovely for ages.even bedding which has been put away, still smells lovely after a couple of weeks..

GeorgeEliot · 04/02/2012 20:36

Yuk yuk yuk to most of these. Fabric conditioner is completely unnecessary and bad for the environment.

Always smells synthetic, imho. Dry clothes naturally and use a low impact detergent (like bioD or Ecover) and you don't need it.

historyrepeats · 04/02/2012 22:57

bold

Ratbag01 · 02/09/2012 18:16

I love Ecover, but they dont seem to do the fabric conditioner which I have loved for years. The new Ecover ones smell highly perfumed and a little too much! I love the Non Bio Tablets for whites.

LadyMilfordHaven · 01/09/2013 14:06

Old thread.
I bloody love fairy fabric conditioner. Normally find over scented clothes a bit gopping. This is subtle and fresh.

I'm almost mainlining it
