Carpets in bathrooms - yea or nay???

Dillydaydreaming · 04/11/2011 07:08

I want to put down a carpet in my bathroom but my mother ( who is possibly too influential over me Grin) says they are not practical in a bathroom. I can see her point but I hate getting out onto a slippery tiled floor. Even with a bath mat it's still slippy.
My plan is to put down a good quality carpet and add a bath mat for use after baths etc.
Sooo - what are thoughts on this? I am also considering a wood look vinyl.
Court of Mumsnet (and especially Good Housekeeping types Grin, what do you think?

No.
Hygiene around the loo is the issue for me.

roguepixie · 04/11/2011 07:10

No. No, no, no ,no, no. Just....no. Grin. Seriously though .... no.

laptopwieldingharpy · 04/11/2011 07:14

never!

ComradeJing · 04/11/2011 07:16

Never, ever, ever.

StitchingMoss · 04/11/2011 07:18

Nope, awful.

Dillydaydreaming · 04/11/2011 07:19

Vinyl it might be then Grin. I think the carpet comes from the property shows where all the posh bathrooms have carpet. Then again they are often huge.

Nononnonononononooooooooooooo
Carpets should never be used in bathrooms. Mouldy damp festering carpets are vile and no man will ever be allowed to wee in your loo as well they all miss the loo at one time or another.
Other warm to touch alternatives are sealed cork (nowadays it doesn't have to be orange), vinyl or rubber (you can get it in many colours and textures - including slate/stone or wood - and if you get a good quality one it really isn't naff) or bamboo floor - a wooden floor that's fine with water.

magpieC · 04/11/2011 07:26

Yes - carpet is warm and nice to have under the feet. I don't get the whole round the loo thing - currently have vinyl (not my choice) and I can't detect anything that would make carpet a problem. Maybe it will be different when (baby) DS gets bigger...

MustControlFistOfDeath · 04/11/2011 07:27

Eeeew no.

I think roguepixie is undecided though Grin

ASuitableGirl · 04/11/2011 07:38

No. It will get wet and be Not Nice

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 04/11/2011 07:41

no, never.

hester · 04/11/2011 07:42

I once viewed a house that had a pink bath suite with burgundy carpet RUNNING UP THE SIDE OF THE BATH.

Thrice nay.

HSMM · 04/11/2011 07:45

I have sealed cork tiles. Every time you flush the loo, even with the lid shut something escapes!

LoveInAColdClimate · 04/11/2011 07:47

No, no, no. Never. Ew.

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 04/11/2011 07:48

Ewww - carpet in bathrooms is wrong and manky and they all end up smelling of pee, and usually damp as well. Just get a really nice large bathmat - more hygienic anyway as some guests have verrucas and athletes foot and at least you can shove a bathmat in the wash at 60 to kill everything

Chicksy · 04/11/2011 07:48

Definitely not unless you only have DD. DS1 and DS2 repeatedly overshoot the toilet in our house a carpet would be destroyed in less than a week.

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 04/11/2011 07:48

PS- not to mention drunken teenage vomiting which most bathrooms experience at some point...

Bonsoir · 04/11/2011 07:49

Yuck. I would never put down any type of bathroom flooring that could not be cleaned with products containing bleach and limescale remover.

Not all tiles are cold, either.

Dillydaydreaming · 04/11/2011 07:53

GrinGrin

I get the message folks and it's a big fat NO!!! Grin

Wood look vinyl it will be then - and now I have a vision for how my bathroom will look when finished and it's lovely.

never.....ever.

we bought this current house we are in and it had a pink bathroom carpet. The removal men hadn't even brought the first box in and I'd ripped the thing out. I'd rather have bare floorboards. Yak - totally unhygenic.

CavemanDaveIsVeryBrave · 04/11/2011 17:06

Hell yes! Thats what pedestal mats are for. Our bathroom is bloody freezing upstairs so we have carpeted. Gets a good steam clean once a week and bobs your mother's brother.

And yes I also own a bog brush!

GrimmaTheNome · 04/11/2011 17:08

Our bathroom has carpet (it was a new house and already fitted) - I've managed to keep it from damp and DH evidently has good aim Grin - but still I agree with you all that other surfaces would be better.

Trouble is the bathroom has a sort of step up round the bath - curved not even straight edged - and I can't quite see how any harder surface would work with this. Do any of you know how to solve this please?

Itsjustafleshwound · 04/11/2011 17:12

Potty training toddler boys and carpet is a no-no.

Carpet is just horrible in the bathroom

ilovesprouts · 04/11/2011 17:14
