Hi...I would start with the items you know you will not need til you arrive at new house. Ornaments....books...extra bedding etc.Bit by bit....start packing your clothes..small furnishings etc. leaving you with bare essentials just before you move out . Good luck with the move!

You can start now by clearing out cupboards and drawers of stuff you don't use often. Then go from there. Some people say room by room but that's a bit too oragnised for my liking! Whatever - just label your boxes carefully and clearly - even when panicking the night before. we've lost so much stuff! it's in the house somewhere.... but where???

Also - you will need loads of boxes. have you sorted your movers yet? get them to deliver whatever freeboes they offer now, and visit your local supermarket daily. The argos box kits are crap!

TheHumancatapult · 03/11/2011 17:30

Thank you

No movers have roped some friends in to shift the stuff once packed

It just seems so daunting

Deep breath and start tomorrow I guess

we had the "loads of crap" problem too. That's why it's important to label. You know where everything is now, because it's "in that pile by the window" or whatever. But once in a box you've got no hope of finding it unless you try to be a bit organised. (more than i was!!).
I feel for you.
And if you happen to find my driving licence, pls let me know!!

ChipsnCheese · 04/11/2011 09:12

p.s. - if you're reading this, stop procrastinating!

LowLevelWhiiingeing · 04/11/2011 09:14

yes, start now because it really does take AGES. just do a box at a time or something so it's not as overwhelming.

dizzyday07 · 04/11/2011 09:26

We started with stuff lurking in the back of cupboards - and of course decide whether to take it with us if we weren't using it! It took my mum and me a whole day to pack up our kitchen!

I agree wholehartedly abolut labelling boxes - both on top and the side - and also if you know where they are going in the new house add that room to the label too.

AngelDog · 04/11/2011 12:53

Yes, we boxed up by destination room and used clean clothes to pack around things (instead of bubble wrap etc).

Redrubyblue · 04/11/2011 13:05

There is no point moving stuff you don't need, want or use.

Start clearing out all old paperwork, buy a shredder so you can use the old shredded documents to pack fragile items in. Start using up the contents of the fridge, freezer and larder and throw out all out of date tins, herbs, spices, etc etc. Do the same with the bathroom cabinets and medicine cabinets.

Pack up all summer clothes and shoes, garden furniture, outside toys and games etc you will not be using them.

Have two piles

Tip

Charity shop

be ruthless. If you haven't worn something or used something for over a year ask yourself whether you really need it.

notcitrus · 04/11/2011 14:40

Anything you won't need until the move, stare at hard now and decide whether to bin, give away, or pack. Summer clothes can all go in suitcases now for example, minus too-small ones to go to charity shop.

Label every box with detail of contents and where they came from - big fat marker pen needed.
And good quality brown packing tape to hold boxes together. Don't get it from the pound shop. More small boxes is better especially for books and papers, but be ruthless with papers!

Also ensure you keep separate your 'stuff for first night in new house', ie kettle, bedding, change of clothes each, etc.

Once you get going it speeds up, especially the last fortnight when you know you won't need most things. Start eating the contents of freezer and cupboards now!
Good luck!
