I want an asymmetric blind/curtain/drape/window treatment thingy

Like a Roman blind, but when I pull the cord I want it to come up on one side only, so that the bottom left corner comes up towards the upper right corner, and exposes the whole window. Does such a thing exist? Does it have a name?

It's pretty much impossible....are your windows a funny shape?

If a blind were to open like that, it would need to be on an arched frame....and your window could not be square or rectangular as the mechanism can't turn corners iyswim.

I think you're thinking about a Venetian blind?

Maybe Roman blind isn't the proper name for what I'm thinking of. It looks something like this - the fabric gathers up in swags when the cord is pulled. AFAIK there are no rigid moving parts.

But for what I want imagine that instead of the cords running vertically down the blind, they ran diagonally across the fabric.

I think you mean festoon blinds then...I will have a look! Anything but work!

Here is an explanation of <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=www.alternative-windows.com/images-blinds/london-blind01.jpg&imgrefurl=www.alternative-windows.com/london-blind.htm&usg=__9MBlvfVlDCnJm0XaSOU1iI82yMQ=&h=198&w=190&sz=9&hl=en&start=14&sig2=JNK3m4-FaY9RvCG-L5NZ0Q&zoom=1&tbnid=RwbpLAaNs58aOM:&tbnh=104&tbnw=100&ei=iYKwTqqqB8WS8gPi8Ky9AQ&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dfestoon%2Bblinds%2Bdiagram%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26rlz%3D1T4ACAW_enGB356GB357%26tbm%3Disch&um=1&itbs=1" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">London Blinds which are a softer version of Festoon linds and wch could be adapted to open in the way you want I think.

But....because the tapes which the cords are threaded through at the back, would need to be put on diagonally, then you would get an odd shaped "bunch" of fabric at the top right of your wndow. This can't be avoided really...you could pobably get them made by a good seamstress but it might not look good even with very fine fabric.

PrettyCandles · 02/11/2011 00:46

Good website - thanks!

The blind is decorative (there's a blackout roller blind within the windiw recess), so lightweight fabric would be fine.

I could make it myself, but need a pattern or instructions.

I think if you follow those instructions but make the tape go diagonally then it will work....the more tapes you put on the more "bunching" you will get...and the higher the fabric will sit...if you put only 3 then it will be quite loopy/draped.

as long as the tapes are placed evenly then it should come together but imo it will look a bit odd....to have draped fabric on an angle is awkward...it won't sit nicely.

PrettyCandles · 02/11/2011 07:12

I was thinking of having only one tape, from corner to corner, so that the blind drapes like a curtain caught on a tie-back, or like an ornamental swag.

A bit like this. Looking at that I realise that the drawcord should not run from corner to corner, but from the lower left side to the upper right corner.

If you google 'asymmetric window treatments', you'll find many elegant arrangements of fabric draped asymmetrically, especially swags. TBH I don't care for them much, either. They look too stiff and unreal.
