Can you freeze glass jars?

Currently DH and I use jars of sauce for curries etc from the supermarket for speed and convenience when we make our evening meals (despite the fact that we both love to cook and could make our own sauces!). We have just started to wean our 6month old DD and would like to start making our own sauces (to minimise the amount of salt and additives she is eating) but would like to batch make them and freeze them, again, for convenience. If we were to start collecting some of the jars we use currently can we put our homemade sauces in them and freeze them?

Is there a better (cheap) alternative?

With a 6mo DD you wouldn't need much sauce?? I used an ice-tray when mine were little. The supermarkets also stock handy tub-sized pots and freezer bags??

Nope, glass constricts when frozen, so it'd shatter...

I also used the ice cube trays

Sorry, I'm thinking a little further ahead for when she eats what we are eating at tea time. She's only just started on vegetable purees this week after ten days on baby porridge for breakfast. Health visitor advised that it's easiest to get DC's eating what parents eat as quickly as possible so we are hoping that maybe by 8 months she'll be eating mashed versions of our meals and therefore we would like to make our own sauces which will be healthier for all of us!

we had something similar to this for DS

you can get various sizes of tupperware-style containers at the supermart very cheaply. It is an advantage to always buy the same brand, then the lids are more likely to fit.

the ice-cube tip is very handy for stuff where you might only want to thaw out a tiny amount. I'm told some people have left-over wine and freeze it like that to add to cooking.

Silver foil trays like you'd get takeaway in. We get um from wilkinsons. Dirt cheap to. Compact for the freezer and I was sick of the Tupperware getting miss shapen and staines

AllTerrainMammy · 31/10/2011 17:48

I've currently got all of her meals frozen in ice cube trays but fairly quickly want to get to the point where I don't have to freeze any meals for her and just mash some of ours for her. Think I might have to go to the supermarket and invest in some tupperware to freeze sauce in. Thank you for the responses.

Ooh, fantastic idea Mellie, I think that is my answer! Piglet, I also like the idea of freezing left over wine to use in cooking (although left over wine in this house is a rarity!) :)

Yes, you can freeze glass jars but you need to use a flexible lid like those cellophane ones for jam jars you can get and leave a good gap for expansion of the contents.

madwomanintheattic · 31/10/2011 17:52

don't use glass.

ds1 learnt a very valuable lesson about constriction and expansion of fluid whilst doing experiments trying to freeze apple juice and water in a glass container. Grin and it wasn't anything to do with his interest in the separation of juice and water and freezing. Grin but i've got most of the glass out of the freezer now.

does anyone know where you can buy those chemistry glass flasks with the rubber bungs in btw? Blush

tupperware is your friend. recycle the glass.

CurrySpice · 31/10/2011 17:53

Just put it in a plastic bag - you can get special freezer ones. Takes up far less room

AllTerrainMammy · 31/10/2011 17:59

Why didn't I think of the simple plastic bag, very obvious, I'll blame 'baby brain'! Given all of your words of wisdom I shall steer clear of freezing glass!! Thank you for your responses, this was my first ever post!

re plastic bags - put them inside another container when you defrost as sometimes they get nicked as you rummage in the freezer.

and they are more difficult to stack when you have a lot of them (or is that just me?)

MysteriousHamster · 31/10/2011 19:20

We use freezable pour and store bags for sauce :)

Annanymous · 01/11/2011 04:09

I always put the freezer bag into a container, then freeze the sauce and then when it's frozen remove the container (so the sauce is in a neat and easily storeable shape)
