Baths / tiles/ showers - tell me how to keep them gleaming and mould-free

If the builders, plumbers and electrician do all their funky stuff this week we will have a new family bathroom to use.

Please tell me all your handy hints for keeping shower glass, tiles and baths gleaming, mould-free and super clean?

I would like to know this as well. I mean, its clean, obviously, but we live in a hard water area and nothing I try keeps the glass free of water marks for long.

The best I can come up with is using a rubber squeegee thingy on the glass but that leaves streaks, as does newspaper and white vinegar. Cleaning, I use Mr Muscle at the moment which is as good as any other.

I dunno about super clean because ours is always grimey, but I'm absolutely vigilent about opening the window after every bath and shower and shutting the bathroom door. Even in winter. We do have a very mouldy bathroom because it's tiny and full of nooks and crannies. I use bleach to clean the bath most weeks, especially in said nooks and crannies.

In our old flat we had a flat glass door to the shower and I used to keep a squeegie in the bathroom so I could clean the door after each shower so I didn't get water marks. Our shower door is jointed now so I can't do it so well. My mum swears by those shower sprays you squirt on and leave after each shower. I'm not so sure. Her shower door always looks streaky :o

We have an internal shower room which is a bugger to keep mould-free. My hints are to keep a squeegee scraper thingy in the shower and to use it after every shower, so you're not leaving the surfaces too wet each time.

If possible keep a radiator on quite low as much as possible - we're thinking of having a heated towel rail installed in ours for this reason.

If all else fails, the Dettox mould remover spray is the best one I've come across for getting rid of mould in the grout etc. But it is a bugger, so it's way better to prevent it getting started in the first place.

Enjoy your new bathroom!

We are about to put in a new bathroom. Mosaic tiles in shower and tile supplier recommended we use epoxy grout on these, it dries like stone so it is drier and mould much less likely to grow, it sounds pretty horrible to work with so your tiler may be less than thrilled but....

The other thing is a super powerful extractor fan in the bathroom to draw out moisture.

Lakeland HG mould remover is the only thing I've found that really gets rid of the mould in our bathroom, I've no idea how to prevent it though.

Dettol mould and mildew spray. It has been the greatest discovery for my bathroom

SootySweepandSue · 06/11/2011 18:03

Swear by Limelite for shower screen and taps. We re in a hard water area and it's a godsend.

I also put sink unblocker down the toilet to save on scrubbing but it's meant to not be great for the enamel, but our bathroom is knackered anyways...

yy to dettoll m&m spray...its great stuff.

Anniepops · 08/11/2011 09:06

I would definitely say Dettol Mould and Mildew too! I thought it was rubbish when I first used it (following the instructions - rinsing off after a given time) ; but then my friend said she just sprays it on a leaves it, only rinsing before the bath/ shower area is to be used. We have bathroom really prone to mould on ceiling and exterior walls and it works fab (although I make myself ill on fumes spraying so much and probably should wear a mask!!

After everyone has had their shower in the morning I get the handtowel and wipe down the tiles, bath, taps and sealant with it (shower is over bath) then sling it in the WM and put out a new one, keeps it gleaming and hopefully mould free (I only started this a few months ago, our old sealant did get mouldy over a few years, we re-did it a few months ago)

I wipe down bath and shower screen and tiles with a squeegee followed by a microfibre cloth after it has been used. Only takes a couple of minutes and really helps to keep things mould and scum free.
