how long have your plates lasted?

We got M&S ceramic plates for our wedding 7 years ago and we are down to one single plate which does not have a crack across the middle.

Looking for replacements before Christmas, but don't have £££ to spend. Do we go ceramic, stoneware or porcelain? Have 2 dc under 5 if that has any bearing.

We got our current main set for a wedding present from Debenhams. We have been married 9 years and I think only damage is one chip in a cereal bowl. They are ceramic. We still have the proper cheap set we got out of argos when we moved in together 15 years ago. Some of those bowls are a little scratched and our cat managed to break a plate once but otherwide ok.

josephinebonaparte · 19/10/2011 19:45

Too bloody long. I'm so bored of my Denby but it will not break even when its dropped on the ceramic tile kitchen floor

banjaxed · 19/10/2011 19:51

Ah. So avoid M&S like the plague then. I'm thinking JL's cheapie stoneware set might be a winner. But I do love their spots (£££). Sigh.

well the set we bought from argos before ds1 was born (so over 7 years now) is doing fine.

cost about £15 iirc

Mine wedding deny was not appropriate once we started having children! Well that was what I told my dh! The truth is I got bored, now I buy cheap and what I fancy and once they get too broken I then have the perfect excuse to find more! Dh of course remains blissfully unaware. Normally a set lasts approx 4 yrrs.

The only thing I would say is that I avoid stoneware simply because the plate gets too hot when you microwave it!

Wills · 02/01/2012 17:30

So that's my wedding denby not deny

cazboldy · 02/01/2012 17:33

I have a denby set that is still perfect - apart from a small chip from being dropped. It was a wedding present - 14 years ago on 31st of January, and has been used daily and we have 5 dc. I do also have lots of cheap crappy sets aswell - nothing matches if we have lots of people over for dinner!

WellHello120mm · 02/01/2012 19:06

Name changer here, not that it matters, but we had ours from ikea about 8 years ago, and also cheap, they have lasted, well the dinner plates have. Like dustbin lids they are too. I have another china set, bought overseas, again cheapies and they are also fine, in fact I wish they weren't as sick of them really.

Meglet · 02/01/2012 19:10

I've got 7yo Portmerion botanic garden and it's all fine so far. Not an entire set (it was stuff I bought or gifts) but very hardwearing, always dishwashed it.

I suspect botanic garden is pretty naff but I'm rather fond of it. It's expensive too IIRC.

mousysantamouse · 02/01/2012 19:12

we are still using the stoneware that mil gave dh and me 10 years ago.
the large bowl broke and one of the cups but the rest is holding nicely.

Pattinson · 17/02/2012 13:59

We still have the proper cheap set we got out of argos when we moved in together 15 years ago.

mumblejumble · 18/02/2012 17:51

Nothing I have lasts more than 6 months, clumsy dh combined with stupid ceramic tiles is the problem.
I want to buy Denby, but think I will curse dh too much, so buy cheapy seconds usually. I have no china left at all....

notapizzaeater · 18/02/2012 18:24

Denby wedding pressies 18 years ago still fine -seems to bounce !!

Labootin · 18/02/2012 18:38

I buy cheap White porcelain only ..no patterns some of it thinking about it is nearly 25 years old..god that's depressing .

Labootin · 18/02/2012 18:40

Best thing to do for longevity is buy chocolate eggs with attached novelty branded mugs/ plates..those fuckers are indestructible

ouryve · 18/02/2012 18:42

I started collecting Denby Juice in the early-mid 90s and just chipped my first plate last month. Typically, it was one of my newest ones, only 9 years old, and typically it will cost more to replace than it cost me to buy new, since it's discontinued.

notapizzaeater · 18/02/2012 20:05

I added to my collection by checking eBay and buying when they where cheap !

SmileItsSunny · 18/02/2012 20:07

Well like josephine too darn long! I bought a set of tesco value plates earlier in the same day we found BEAUTIFUL china to spend our wedding present money on... Now we have used our V&B china only about 6 times in 4 years Sad
