I'm bumping for you again - I'm looking for the same thing, OR does anyone know where you can hire them from? Bloody cat has had fleas and I want to steam all the carpets. I've got one of those little hand held steamers and it has been a godsend for cuddly toys and mattresses etc.

I know I'm not answering your question, but i just had my carpets professionally cleaned. It was cheap because it was a Groupon offer, but I'm never cleaning them myself again! He did a much, much better job, it was much quicker (he did in 1.5hrs what would have taken me several weekends) and they were dry in 4-5hrs. Smile

Its much better to get carpets professionally cleaned. Just had mine done and was told their machinery is 4 times more powerful than a Dyson! Most upright steam cleaners are good for tiled floors and are much of a muchness (but I would recommend one where you can detach and use as a handheld).

I have just finished cleaning my filthy carpet with a rug doctor that I hired from Morrisons for £18.99 for 24 hours.
It has probably taken 4 hours all together and have cleaned lounge, hall, dining room, stairs, spare room and our big bedroom.
I did it 6 months ago and used concentrated non-bio laundry liquid after reading a thread on here but this time I used proper carpet shampoo and pre-treated stains before hand...anyway it is now immaculate and house smells gorgeous.

Is a rug doctor the same as a steam cleaner? Or is it just a shampoo job (which I could do with anyway, but might just 'wash' the fleas rather than sending them and all their offspring to Kingdom Come, preferably painfully)

unrequitedskink a rug doctor is more shampoo based rather than steam based, but my mum uses the bissell carpet shampoo Pet Stain and Odour and she thinks its brill but she uses it in her Vax. However Steam will kill fleas, if you have someone out to do it advise them that you have pets and they'll often add an additive to help with odours and pet stains. You can also ask for them to include a coating to help defend against stains. MiL had a man to do it, usually it takes her all day to do her downstairs and he'd done all the rooms, up and down in 2 hours. Dried out by the evening. She has an elderly cat who's standards of cleanliness has slipped.

Hiya, I've got a karcher steam cleaner that I use on my laminate floors and rugs. I think it was £130 from Argos.

I would recommend it and overall I am happy with it but I had read such glowing reviews beforehand that initially I was really dissapointed- it's not a miracle cleaning solution (I got sucked in and thought it would blast the limescale off my taps- it didn't!) but for regular cleaning it's better than a mop and it does bring the rugs up really nicely.

The other plus side is that you can use it for other bits- I have cleaned my windows, my shower, my curtains and my sofa with it. I have also read but not yet tried out that you can steam mattresses and ovens.
