Anyone bought a good carpet cleaner?

Our cream carpets are getting a bit of a pasting with a toddler and a teenager - the flat's on the market so I've had to have them cleaned twice in the past 12 months. I'm thinking it might be worth getting a carpet cleaner. It would be useful if it cleaned hardwood floors too.

Advice needed!

I went halves on a Vax cleaner last year (about £200) with my MIL as she is obsessed with clean carpets. I'm not obsessed but have cream carpets, a preschooler and 2 big dogs who never wipe their feet.

The vax is great, cleans dirt and stains well. The only thing about having cleaned the carpets is that they do seem to get dirty quicker than before, almost as though there was some dirt-repellent coating on the carpets that I've washed away?

To be honest, I'd spend a couple of hundred for something that worked. Bissell is a make that's been recommended but I was hoping someone would have one and give it the thumbs up.

I had a Vax hoover that was absolute rubbish and weighed a tonne.

Yes, I was looking at that, it gets rave reviews. It looks awfully big to store though.

we've got a bissell i think it's called aroma something, maybe aroma pro. we got a reconditioned model from their website which was half the price of brand new. It's a which best buy and pretty good but doesn't get rid of all old stains (we moved house and hoped it be better on the prestained carpets than it was)

I've got the £200+ Vax and it is fab -just cleaned the carpets and stairs in a 3 bed house today and was really pleased with the results. To store it takes up a little bit more room than my old Dyson hoover, and I keep it in the shed.

I have a Vax Rapide Ultra (I think I paid around £150-ish for it online) and it is brilliant. It has a great attachment that works well on picking up spills and cleaning the stairs. It is easy to assemble and empty the dispensers (compared to previous carpet washers I've had)

It is much, much better than the $$$ cleaner I had when I lived in the States--a Hoover SteamVac. The buggery thing never worked right at all.

I have had a Bissell AromaPro for a couple of years now, to keep our cream carpets under control. Easy to use, good at sucking the water back up so that the carpets dry reasonably quickly. Does a nice job.

Thanks for all your posts. onlyaphase is it this one? I'm glad it's good on stains, DS has just managed to dislodge a whole load of rubble from the chimney Shock

i've got a bissel pro-heat 2x and it is fantastic; makes the carpets look new.
but like onlyaphase mentioned, steam cleaned carpets get dirty faster

WhereYouLeftIt · 21/09/2011 19:01

Most carpets are Scotch-Guard'ed for protection, but many of the liquids sold for steam-cleaners have that in them. It might just be a perception anyway - having got them sparkling again, your eyes kind of zero in on the least speck.

Onlyaphase · 21/09/2011 19:10

this is the one I have. I've cream carpets, 2 labradors and a child who eats and drinks in the living room. I'm happy with this Vax

Hi there,
I have just bought a Bissell Alrounder which can also be used for vacuum cleaning. It is a cylinder vac and is a bit on the heavy side, although nothing I can't manage - flexes biceps.
I have just cleaned my filthy, beige carpet and it has done a great job. It is the proheat type of machine, which means it heats up tap water until it is pretty hot - this is optional you could use cold or warm tap water though.
I followed the instructions, didn't overwet and sooked up all the excess water and the carpet felt almost dry yesterday evening - I shampooed it yesterday afternoon.
I have also had a cylinder vax and cylinder Hoover carpet cleaners and this cleaner does a much better job of cleaning and of drying the carpet afterwards.
The Bissell cleaning fluid contains scotchguard, not sure if that will make a difference, but we will certainly challenge it in our house.
I was mainly doing patches which were bad, rather than the whole carpet, didn't want to have too much wet carpet when the weather is so wet.

Mamateur · 22/09/2011 13:38

That's interesting rowing it would be so much easier to store than an upright. I'm just worried because there are massive stains in DS's room from the chimney soot. I might buy more expensive Bissel fluid then.

Mama the machine I bought had a couple of bottles with it, one for hard floors and one for carpets. It does upholstery too, which would be a bit dange with an upright. Can you imagine?!Shock
When I have finished the carpets the suite is next...

Mamateur · 23/09/2011 10:18

Thanks rowing, I think I'll get one of those asap. My next job is painting over the crayon scrawls on the paintwork. A Severn Bridge scenario in this house Grin.

Oh that sounds lovely, you should just leave it and paint the river underneath. Grin
