Caustic soda - from a hardware shop. Wear gloves and be very careful. Leave for an hour or so. It's evil stuff but it does get rid of the grot.

You don't need to tie up the ballcock, just bail out the water with a cup to reduce the water level.

A handful of false teeth tablets left overnight?

insanityscatching · 05/09/2011 21:23

Steradent tablets are fabulous and clear stains that Harpic doesn't. If you make the water warm by pouring in hot water then they work even better tbh. Tesco own brand are 48p for 30 I pop two in once a week to keep the loo stain free for stubborn stains I'd put in 4 or 5 and leave overnight.

I often tip down a bottle of bleach and a cup of washing powder or liquid. and leave it all day when dcs are at school and flush before they come home. open a window though as it is probably a bit dangerous Grin

CointreauVersial · 05/09/2011 21:24

Who'd have thought false teeth get limescale? Grin

Careful with bleach, it does rot the rubber seals around the wastepipe if used too much. My plumber told me never to use it.

showmethemummy · 05/09/2011 21:25

i live in a very hard water area and we also had this problem until recently when someone insisted that harpic ( in blue bottle, 100% limescale removal ) would work. it absolutely did after merely two or three uses.

Top tip from my DH here - Brick and Mortar cleaner (£9.99 from Wickes for a huge container).

Brings even the worst toilet to sparkling, and works really quickly. He normally pours a good few glugs into the bowl and leaves it for about 30 mins. It then wipes off easily (without scrubbing), even without draining the water. It really works brilliantly.

Just be careful using it around metal fittings as it is an acid.

AnaisB · 05/09/2011 21:49

By the way after reading browneyes post don't use bleach with anything acidic.

AnaisB · 05/09/2011 21:49

(sure you knew that though)

Ours was the same, after a year of building dust in it from a renovation i scrubbed it clean as best i could but there were still dirt stains under the water level that were just engrained. id tried everything then last week bought the power toilet duck (it cos a pound in the red/black bottle) i put it in the toilet and left it, went back later anf flushed it and was surprised to see where it had settled in the bottom it had cleaned the dirt off and was sparkling white, so i threw some more down and cleaned it with the brush, i promise this will solve your problem!

cocal cola works too(empty as much water out as you can first
