Drying the washing without a Tumble dryer

Do those of you who don't own a tumble drier still do washing on a rainy day?

The Lakeland website is down atm - we have one of their heated clothes driers, and it's brilliant. Costs about £70 though. It's in our garage and will dry 2 loads of washing overnight.

Ceiling Airer, dries about four times faster than a floor standing clothes horse. Really is the best £50 we ever spent.

If you have a garage (and it isn't full of junk like mine), string up a line and hang washing in there. If you can open the door(s) so much the better - it'll dry even in a thunderstorm.

I have a tumble drier, but even on rainy days I put the clothes on the airers overnight and turn them from time to time - I never tumble dry for longer than 30 minutes.

I've started using the launderette too, RememberYoureaWomble. My kids are quite happy as it's right next to a little park, and I can dry 3 loads of washing in half an hour. Three loads of wet washing is heavy though! Last time I walked with DS in the pushchair so I had to pull the washing behind me in a huge suitcase... Kind of looking forward to the heating being back on.

On dry days I use the line; on wet days I use 2 airers and park them in the spare room out of sight. Everything tends to be dry by the next day (we always do a load of laundry - not every day - as soon as we wake up so it has a full day and night to dry inside). I don't like washing drying all over the house so am thankful for our spare room.

You need this airer. Ikea do a version too. Yes, it's expensive, but it's SO worth it!

BertieBotts · 06/09/2011 10:36

Oh okay, well at £30-40 it's cheaper than the other options mentioned Grin

BertieBotts · 06/09/2011 10:37

£30 - the ikea one has gone down in price.

Having suffered with damp in 2 flats which I just know was caused by drying inside, I recently moved and swore I'd never dry anything inside ever again. Fortunately the new place is opposite a launderette!

Before DD2 arrived & stole the spare room I hung it all up on airers in there (I HATE having it hung up around the house) Now I use the tumble dryer far too much but hang the stuff that can't be tumbled on airers in our room. DH is adamant that we don't need a spare room to hang the washing in and store crap in so I make sure the airers are on his side of the room!

I'm seriously considering getting one of those ceiling airers to put in our (tiny) utility room or perhaps the garage so I can stop using the tumble dryer so much.

LittleMissProcrastinator · 08/09/2011 09:57

to bessie,

I think I just need to get on and make myself do some washing (even if it looks like it is grey outside). I worry about the house getting damp but if it is raining outside I guess I'll have no choice but to dry it indoors.
I think I had a bit of PND with both my dc, that's part of the reason why It all got so bad. and I'm also good at procrastinating!

BertieBotts I have bought one of those airers just recently so it should help me get a bit more done.

Thanks all for your helpSmile
