So far I have:

Checked wood situation and stocked up
bought cheap ikea fleeces to line curtains in the DCs rooms
put up the thicker curtains in DS2's room since he just had voile panels over the summer
bought fleecey pjs for the DCs in the sales
ordered new slippers for the DCs
started making heated wheat pack thingies
dug out the hot water bottles and higher tog quilts from the loft

DH thinks I've gone mad given that its still August but I'm feeling good knowing that I'm going to be organised this year!

I usually add a winter lining between curtain and original lining, and as it doesn't show, I measure it to be around the actual length without gathering and pin it into place, making it less bulky and less costly as well as easier to wash separately. I don't hem mine either and some are around ten years old, but have not yet tried fleece.

Apart from usual clear-out and restocking of freezer, packets of yeast etc.,
my main winter stock-up is long-life milk, with a few packets of Easi-Yo to make own yoghurt with water for a few weeks if housebound.

Lay out the curtain on the floor or a large table and cut a piece of fleeced lining to fit, and tack in in place discreetly between the curtain and usual lining, or alternatively cut a piece of fleeced lining 1.5 times the width of the window, trim the length, and then head with ruffle tape before attaching it with curtain hooks to existing curtain.

Thanks. :)

I had a look at my living room curtains, which is the coldest room (north facing, bay window, next to front door) and I reckon I can do the extralayer between lining & curtain there. I'll have a go at the other way of doing it for my other curtains, as the lining and curtain are sewn together at the bottom.

When I made my curtains I used header tape with three slots, so if I need to add a third layer in the winter I just attach them. This is also useful if your lining rots because of high levels of sun as you can replace it whenever necessary.
