Which vacuum cleaner should I buy?

Our bagless vax looks like it has finally given up the ghost. I need a new vaccuum cleaner sometime very, very soon as I have four small children in the house and it is the summer holidays....

Please send me recommendations (preferably with links)! I'd like something with the most powerful 'suck' possible, preferably upright and bagless as that is what I'm used to!

So far this Dyson and this vax look like possibilities. Is it worth paying extra for the dyson or is there something better out there?

Thanks in advance!

It's not bagless, but I have a sebo - also have 4 children!

I used to have a Dyson but the Sebo is so much "suckier"

Iggly · 14/08/2011 14:25

Also have a sebo too. We had an upright bagless Dyson but having bags and non upright is fine TBH! it's brilliant, it's the vulcano here

This is light and easier on stairs. Plus very powerful but you can vary the suction so not an issue. Also has two heads - one for carpet, the other for carpet and hardfloors.

weepootle · 14/08/2011 14:29

I've had 2 Dyson's and would never have another, they have great suction for the first 6 months then never suck the same again- even after all the filter changes etc.

Borrowed a Dyson for a few weeks once ......... bloody useless. Ridiculously heavy and cumbersome, nightmare on the stairs and that crazy vertical hosepipe thing that appears to be the handle?! Over-priced and aimed at label Mabels.
Another vote for a Sebo here. Great suction, easy-to-access attachments and light to carry.

Sorry to crash your thread, but has anyone an opinion on a Miele?

Urbanvoltaire · 14/08/2011 20:17

I love my Miele ...

it's been the best vacuum I've had, bettercthan Dyson IMHO

Doomandgloom · 14/08/2011 23:04

bramblina · 14/08/2011 23:06

Miele Cat and Dog, all the way Wink Cannot rave about it enough. Love my Miele Grin

farrowandballs · 14/08/2011 23:37

Another vote for Miele Cat and Dog. It has changed me. As a whole person. In a good, cleaner way.

HerRoyalNotness · 14/08/2011 23:40

Any opinions in the Henry/hettie

Iggly · 15/08/2011 07:22

Had a Henry. However not powerful enough for our carpets IMO.

DorisVinyard · 15/08/2011 07:54

Got a Henry - love it. Lots of pets too. Had a Dyson but got fed up of having to constantly empty it and dismantle the head to get hair out of the brushes.

maggiethecat · 16/08/2011 22:40

Another miele fan - not even the cat and dog one - has been going strong for 10 years!

NorksAreMessy · 17/08/2011 02:05

Henry every time...with turbo boost button.
Copes with cat and dog hair, sewing cotton thread, beads, spiders :) and assorted lumps of unidentifiable stuff

Am just about to buy a second one for upstairs though, as they are cumbersome to lug about.

Not bag less, but I have gone off that idea anyway. I like a nice tidy bag of crap to plank straight in the bin

HerRoyalNotness · 17/08/2011 02:12

Mmmm interesting, I have wooden floors throughout with only a couple of rugs.

NorksAreMessy · 17/08/2011 02:20

See Henry is good at that. Has brush thingy for wood floors, smooth thingy for rugs and a turbo boost for seriously hairy floor of my long haired DD

ChippingIn · 17/08/2011 02:23

Henry everytime. There is nothing they wont tackle!

Iggly - they practically remove my carpets from the floor?! Maybe yours was faulty.

HerRoyalNotness · 17/08/2011 02:28

Would I be foolish to get the hettie? Is it just a Henry in pink or is the Henry a different beast?

ChippingIn · 17/08/2011 02:33

She's Henry in a dress :)

You can get different model in both Henry and Hettie.

Iggly · 17/08/2011 07:35

I dunno - it seemed fine to me - more powerful than my last vacuum cleaner but when I switched to a sebo well sometimes I can't move it on the highest setting, it's that powerful! The Henry seemed ok until I got the sebo then I realised what I was missing Grin

Sleepglorioussleep · 17/08/2011 09:47

Our upright sebo is just fab!

deebelle · 20/02/2013 17:08

It seems Sebo really worked hard :) Tough though...
