Plain carpet all the way through Lots of light brown smudges. We had it cleaned by a firm a couple of years ago but not impressed I clean it up from myself with carpet stuff but it really needs a good clean.Any ideas?

You need to find a firm with a good reputation that has a van mounted commercial cleaner which has a powerful vacuum pump and a long hose that can clean and pretty much dry your carpets all in one go. Fairly expensive but worth it and much better than the ones that come with a machine they drag around inside your house on wheels.

moreBeta is right, kind of. professional carpet cleaners can do a great job if you get a good one. the trouble is it's easy to come across ones that do just as bad a job as a rug doctor can do.

you don't however need someone with a van mounted machine as portables can do a great job IF used by a pro.

my advice would be look around for companies and ask them the machine they use. have a quick google image search for the machine and see how big it is. if they use something the same size as a henry then run a million miles.

just thought i'd also point out that sometimes i may advise customers to rent a machine if they really just want a very quick top up clean and they are short on money however I assume as you're on mumsnet you have kids so i'd really advise against it. the chemicals you put down wont be properly neutralised and may remain. the products you can buy from tesco etc even say on them keep out of reach of children hen customer go poor them on the carpets where the kids are crawling around.

I hope this helps

Chemicals are no problem as no animals and just one teenager I can afford up to £100

ah if your budget is £100 then perhaps renting isn't such a good idea as it'll eat into it. for £100 imo you're going to stuggle to find a mahcine to give any results. I could be wrong though so may be worth waiting for other peoples opinions. I feel it may be better (though more expensive in the long run) in getting a carpet cleaner in and say your budget is £100 what can they do.

imagine spending £100 on a washing machine; it wouldn't be very good. now imagine putting a 2/3 year old tshirt that has been worn every day in the £100 machine; it's fair to say it wont be a very good.
