have just exchanged my aunty council house, the thing is she had dogs and was a heavy smoker... we have managed to get rid of smell in every room apart from the kitchen :-( we have scrubbed all over , bleached, air freshner, plug ins....
the smell is a mixture of smoke and dog urine :-( its disgusting...we have had the house 7 weeks now but only slept here for 1st time last night it was that bad, the full house needed gutting out!!!

maybe the dog wee has soaked into the plinths ( think that is what you call them the wood that sits between the cup board and the floor ) what floor have you got in our council kitchen we had a tiled floor so used bleach water to scrub it if you have a differant flooring maybe wee has soaked underneath try lifting it up to see whats underneath never been in a council house that did not have tiled floor in kitchen

WorzselMaamage · 21/05/2011 12:33

You might need to replace the floorboards Confused

Carrotsandcelery · 21/05/2011 12:35

I was told on mumsnet that white vinegar absorbs bad smells.

This sounds like the floor has dog urine soaked into it though. If it has linoleum can you lift it and bleach the floor boards underneath?

zazzabeans · 22/05/2011 07:16

thanks for replies, the floor was lino, my dh took it up and its a concrete floor so have scrubbed it with bleach, the smell is less now but still there :-(

You can buy a product from vetuk that removes the odour and stain of cat urine. Have a look, there might be a dog urine one. Do the entire floor and the skirting boards etc. The cat stuff costs about £10 and would easily treat a kitchen.

Carrotsandcelery · 22/05/2011 14:38

Could it also be in the skirting boards and the back of the lino - can you turn the lino over and scrub it? What a nightmare!

MagicFoxhole · 23/05/2011 21:00

Agree about the animal urine neutraliser, have tried and it works.

Would recommend cleaning the ceiling and stripping any wallpaper. Remove or repaint skirting boards and replace flooring.

Do you have access to a steam cleaner?
