How much to charge for DIY?

I am getting my son a new bed soon, probably a cabin bed. I am absoloutely useless at DIY and just the thought of it makes me feel like crying. I thought I could pay someone to put it together for me....but don't know how much money to offer? I'm pretty skint but need the job done. But I also don't know how long the job will take! I was thinking between £20 - £30??

sounds about right, as an odd job by a trusted friend or neighbour. The bed shop might have a young assistant who could do it. If I was doing it for a friend or neighbour I would accept tea and cake but be offended if offered money. Be aware that most young men who have not had their own homes have no idea of DIY.

However anyone wanting to make a living out of it would probably have to charge £50.

I reckon you need to learn to use a screwdriver.

Sorry.

I'm hesitant to ask a friend, because it's such a huge time consuming favour and people are so busy. I have an uncle who always fixes my computer so don't want to hassle him, my dad has just had an op, and so on...I've run out of people that I feel comfortable asking!

I might be prepared to have a go myself but some of the cabin beds I've looked at have had reviews where people have said 2 people are needed (esp as there are heavy peices) and that it's taken 2-4 hours!

Hey, if you are in or around Edinburgh, I'll come and give you a hand...:) Hope you find someone.

Aw bless you BrawToken. London's not too far away..... Grin

You've both made me think though, you seem happy to help a neighbour or a complete stranger(!) so maybe I should ask someone I know. I just don't like putting anyone in an awkward position by asking.

We have a local "Handy Husband." Are they all over? He quoted up front. £45 for around 2 hours mine was - and a super chap. If you do find a helpful friend/neighbour put the bed up with him (or her :) ) Learn how to do these things - I wish I had instead of letting people simply do stuff for me. Can't be that hard can it.... drills and stuff Confused

I really couldn't afford £45 (especially after just buying a bed!) but I can totally understand why they would charge that. I am really going to make the effort to learn, I can't keep finding myself in this predicament!
