New cleaner - how much should I expect her to get done?

Looking for MNetter advice and experience!

DH has today engaged a cleaner, a recommendation from one of his work colleagues. It has not started SO well, but this could be down to the big language barrier thing and DH not being clear. My suggestion is that we write it all down and check it with her.

So we rent a 3 storey town house. We moved into it when it was new. Everything is painted white with either tiles or wooden floors. After 3 years of my slack attempts at cleaning, it is OK on the surface but really needs Kim and --Aggie a good spring clean - dust in corners, marks on doors/walls etc etc

There is a big room on the top floor, currently occupied by lodger. On the 1st floor there are 3 bedrooms, a shower room and a bathroom. On the ground floor, there is a hall and loo, and one big open room with a kitchen in one corner.

So DH basically asked to start downstairs and deep clean everything, then gradually move up. When this is done, in a few years weeks, we would like to get some ironing in if possible. All OK. She can come Mon and Fri for 3 hours so 6 hours in total. And off he went to leave her too it for a couple of hours.

So when we got home, she had basically gone through the book shelves and the desk - really thoroughly I might add - all the books and cds out, glasses washed etc etc, but nothing else. No general dusting, no hoovering etc.

So I am a bit Hmm but would like to give her the benefit of the doubt. But I think we need to be clearer on what we expect ie to me I would expect each week that the bathrooms are cleaned, the floor is hoovered and mopped, Kitchen wiped over etc, the "general" cleaning really. Then each week to concentrate on one area ie wiping down doors, cleaning behind things etc.

But I have no clue how much I can expect her to get done in 6 hours. I need to write a her a list. Has anyone got a similar sized house and a cleaner? Help!

We have a 3 bed detached, 1 4 year old and 2 cats.

Cleaner does 3 hours a week. Place cleaned, but not bottomed as in paint work/windows.

In 6 hours I think you could gut a house that size. Or at least all apart from lodgers bit.

when we had a cleaner, she did 3 hours a week. 3 beds, bath, living room, entrance hall and large kitchen/diner: vacuumed/mopped, dusted, surfaces cleaned, bathroom cleaned, and then ironing, with occasional fridge cleaning (not every time) or other task on request.

I had a spring clean the other day. I hadn't cleaned very thoroughly for a bout a month due to holidays, etc.

The cleaner took 6 hours to gut my kitchen, bathroom, sitting room and hall / stairs. Everything looked as new and shiny as is possible!

I get a cleaner in every couple of months or so to give me a break and a hand.

In 6 hours she does a really thorough job of most rooms I have specified. Under tables, around corners and other sneaky places. Sparkling and clean!

So for three storey house I'd expect two storeys to be done pretty well in 6 hrs.

So in other words it is quite possible for a good cleaner to do the general cleaning plus bring the place back up to scratch within a very few weeks?

agree with the others BUT she was doing what your DH asked - a really thorough deep clean. If you wanted basic cleaning with deep cleaning of specific areas after the basic cleaning has been done then that is what you need to specify.

I would have a list of the basics that needed doing every week and then the deep cleaning that you want working through.

I guess yes, I want to not have to clean the bathroom, hoover, sort the kitchen, but also I need her to catch up on the neglected bits too. I did say to DH that we would have been better going through an agency, but we had a big barney about him leaving everything for me to sort out, so I was impressed that he had made this effort. The language problem is a biggy, but he will see her, and it's unlikely that I will.

looking at it from the housekeepers/cleaners view.
i worked 10-2 mon -fri .(with 2 others- 60 hrs a week work)
the house size -number of pets/family-job list is going to be different for each family.
this was a large old 5 bed ,5 bath farmhouse with grounds ,lots of pets,4 children and a stay at home mum.
