cleaning with steam cleaners/mops

CoffeeIsMyFriend · 14/05/2011 09:58

Just got the new Lakeland catalogue and have noticed steam mops/cleaners and wondered if anyone had one and if they are any good?

I am thinking something like this could cut cleaning time down and chemicals too.

Any suggestions? (Apart from get a cleaner) Wink

They take a good 20 minutes to heat up and you have to keep waiting for them to get back up to steam, so I wouldn't say that they save time. You still need some cleaning products, eg carpet shampoo. But for the right job they are really good.

My steam mop is amazing - it takes 20 seconds, yes seconds to heat up. It does an amazing job on the floors - tiles/lino/wood etc the only thing you have to be careful of is that the floor is sealed if it is wood or laminate and not to use it on unsealed teracotta tiles.

The Steam Mop is also good for cleaning the surface of the carpet - clearly it wont do a deep clean as it has no injectors or extractors.

You don't need any chemicals at all

My steamer takes about 3-4 minutes to heat up and is pretty good for cleaning all sorts of things - sadly it's currently residing in another country.

chipping I do remember your steam mop thread. And I have it on my lakeland list. Wink

I am sure we had a wallpaper steam stripper (2 actually) that had all the other attachments for cleaning housey things, alas after lending to someone we now have none!

Will go agoogling and see what I can find.

i have a Lakeland one. It heats up in about a minute. Fab for wooden floors.

One of the best cleaning tools I have ever bought.

TheProvincialLady · 14/05/2011 12:23

Well I clearly need to update my rubbish steam cleaner don't I!

ChippingIn · 14/05/2011 12:24

Clearly LP, clearly :)

TheProvincialLady · 14/05/2011 12:42

A steam mop is no good to me though as I only have unsealed wooden floors and terracotta tiles, apart from a bit of carpet. I need a better steam cleaner though. I would use mine more often if it heated quicker (honest guv).

ChippingIn · 14/05/2011 15:40

TPL - do you know the floors are unsealed? They don't have to look varnished? Same with the teracotta tiles - my friend has them and they look unsealed (matt and 'dry' looking) but they are in fact sealed.

I would never put down a hard floor that couldn't be cleaned with a steam mop now.

My current floor is a cheap laminate that's not sealed, I've been using the mop on it for over a year now and it's still OK. I'm prepared to take the risk as the floor will be replaced at some stage when the kitchen is gutted so I'm not at all concerned if it loosens the adhesive. It's worth the risk to have lovely clean floors with no hassle!

TheProvincialLady · 14/05/2011 15:54

Yes the terracotta is definitely unsealed, original Victorian ones in terrible condition. The wooden floor was varnished but it is wearing now so there are unsealed patches. I would love a steam mop otherwise, they sound great.

ChippingIn · 14/05/2011 15:56

Shame about the floors (though they do sound lovely :) ) I guess it depends what you long term plans are for them whether it's worth the risk or not.

I'm renovating at the moment and the dust is driving me insane - but I still have a shiney kitchen floor Grin

TheProvincialLady · 14/05/2011 16:53

DustHmm We pulled our bathroom ceiling down and chipped off all the plaster a few weeks ago. It's replastered and tiled now but the dust is still everywhere. Why does renovating always sound so much glamourous fun when in fact it is a grim nightmare?

We're keeping the wood but not sure about the kitchen tiles as they really are a mess. They're not broken but there is so much ground in dirt and nothing I have tried so far has shifted it. I think we may have to replace them.

What are you renovating?

CoffeeIsMyFriend · 16/05/2011 16:53

Funny how the brick dust lasts so much longer than anything else in the renovation!

Lakeland have discontinued the Light n Easy Steam Mop :(

Thankfully I got one in time. I do love it.

There are others around though, so don't be too distressed Grin

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 18/05/2011 18:00

Oh - they have them on Amazon.

BorderBinLiner · 18/05/2011 20:02

Provincial Lady, try biological wasking powder, I used the liquid mix with hot water, scrubbing brush and a lot of old towels.
