Cleaning long stem vases - Help!

Do any of you good housekeeping gurus have any ideas on how to clean the bottom of long stem vases. I have a couple of lovely ones but the bottom of the vase - where I cant reach with sponges/brushes etc - are discoloured with brown bits and bleach/dishwasher hasnt improved it at all. Any ideas?

I seem to remember reading something about vinegar and rice! The vinegar is a glass cleaner (ingredient in all shop bought glass products) and the rice is used as the brush where you can't reach...

Put vinegar and water in vase, pour uncooked rice in and SWIRL IT GIRL!!!

Apparently this should work. I think you then have to rinse it out well so your house doesn't stink of vinegar!

Would love to know whether it works. x

I usually soak them in washing powder like ariel

I have an old baby-bottle brush with a very small brush (presumably for teats?) on the back end - that can get pretty much anywhere!

Thanks guys - will give these a go and report back! Amum in scotland - tried the old baby bottle brush but just doesnt reach it - so frustrating...

MIl put one of her dentures tablets in mine (or possilby 2) and filled it with water and left overnight . It worked

In my house:

Look at vase

Abandon next to sink for a few days

Look at vase

Stick long handled brush in vase

Break vase

Vase gone: no longer have to think about it Grin

Wilko's right price denture tablets. Before that, I used a dishcloth on the end of a wooden spoon, but the tablets work much better.

toilet cleaner (harpic black or something like that, not just bleach)

Or Magic Balls from Lakeland, similar to the rice trick, but they are metal, possibly copper small ball bearings, swirl with fairy liquid.
Do remember to put a seive underneath when pouring out so they don't go down the sink likeI did

superdollyfragilistic · 09/05/2011 13:02

Not quite got the strike through thing clearly!

dinkystinky · 09/05/2011 14:08

Wow - never heard of magic balls! There's a wilkos near my parents - will see if can get thm to acquire those denture tablets as they're visiting this weekend.

Pet water bottle brush. They're really long because they're designed for large bunny size bottles, should only cost a few quid from a pet store.
