bleach

what do you use bleach to clean? My sister seems to use it for everything in the kitchen and bathroom to clean the sinks, baths, floors and all the surfaces. Her house smelt like a swimmimg pool today. I think its horrible stuff so i only use it to squirt down the loo because thats the only place i really want to make sure that i'm killing any germs only because my lo is now taking himself off to the toilet by himself. My mum is like my sister and uses it all over house too. Does anyone else use it for anything else apart from cleaning toilets?

Pour down my drains
Wash my kitchen clothes and sponges (let them soak) overnight

bibbitybobbityhat · 07/05/2011 17:48

The smell literally makes me heave.

Therefore I never buy it.

We are all still here Grin.

I use bleach for lots of things - although my use has decreased over the past few years. (Ever since I was cleaning with bleach and squirted another cleaner in bath and caused a little chemical reaction, making myself ill)

Now only used for loos, down sinks/drains and cleaning clothes, oh and a little teeny bit in washing machine to help clean it monthly.

DooinMeCleanin · 07/05/2011 17:52

Everything. Your sister and I would get on. I love the smell of bleach.

southeastastra · 07/05/2011 17:55

i use it to brighten sink only.

MrsChemist · 07/05/2011 18:00

I just use it in the bathroom for the toilet bath and sink, down drains, to clean my kitchen sink and to clean my washing machine.

mousymouse · 07/05/2011 18:36

I don't use it at all.
Your sister is weird ;)

tamegazelle · 07/05/2011 19:18

I know this sounds a silly question - but have never used bleach. When you soak your sponges or use it or cleaning, what proportion of bleach to water do you use?

Beamur · 07/05/2011 19:23

I use it down loo and occasionally in sink.
Be really careful using it elsewhere, its incredibly caustic and should only be used heavily diluted! A chum of mines wife is totally houseproud and a complete clean freak and wiped the taps/shower with neat bleach, he ended up in hospital with chemical burns to his eyes after touching the tap then rubbing his eye.

ongakgak · 07/05/2011 19:27

cleaning cloths- soaked overnight
diluted to mop lino and slate floors
down the loo
all sinks

It is cheap and effective.

Use dettol diluted for surfaces/sides/tables

stofstg · 08/05/2011 00:17

@tamegazelle i can't say i use bleach to clean sponges but my bottle of domestos says use a capful of the bleach. Only know that because i just read my bottle of bleach when sat on the loo just now. @mousymouse yeah my sister is a bit strange lol. Anyhow, just given my loo a good squirt of bleach. Bye bye germs hehe

tamegazelle - rather than use bleach I stick the scourer and washing up brush in the dishwasher every time it runs and put my kitchen cloth (I have a stack of them) in the wash every day (ie in with the clothes I know some mners disagree with this practice).

Valpollicella · 08/05/2011 00:31

I have to use a kitchen cleaner containing bleach as my work surfaces seem to absorb and retain every tiny particle of tomato/coffee/wine type stains and nothing else will shift them.

I am constantly having to shout at DS, 'Noooo it's got bleach on it, out of the kitchen!!!'

perplexedpirate · 08/05/2011 00:41

Never use it, wouldn't know how to use it.

All still alive. Smile

bibbitybobbityhat · 08/05/2011 20:57

Kitchen cloths: pour the remains of a boiled kettle of water over it whenever you have made a cup of tea/coffee, squeeze out and hang to dry. Wash on a hot wash with towels or tea towels a few times. Then buy a new pack.

Washing up brushes: put in dishwasher.

Drains: pour a kettleful of boiling water down kitchen sink and kitchen outside drain (where dishwasher and washing machine drain into) every Saturday morning.

Toilets: pine fresh toilet duck.

= absolutely no need to use bleach whatsoever.

stofstg · 08/05/2011 21:09

isn't toilet duck just a fragranced and coloured bleach though?

OP posts:
bibbitybobbityhat · 08/05/2011 21:12

I don't think so.

AngelDog · 08/05/2011 21:45

Nothing.

Is disinfectant the same thing? I use that for washing out buckets that someone's been sick in.

AngelDog · 08/05/2011 21:46

Oh, I do use laundry bleach in my nappy wash though.

mousymouse · 09/05/2011 09:22

stofstg, loo cleaner contains bleach (to kill the germs) but has other ingredients, like soap and lime scale remover as well to hygenically clean.
