the old ones didnt have a revolving bit - my dad had an old one that was fixed and didnt rotate so it is normal

Recipes from that time used to include words "give a quarter-turn after ? minutes" in order for food to cook evenly all round, so best if you do this ; it's the only reason they now revolve automatically.

Thanks all - my dh now wants to give it away as he thinks old ones may be dangerous and leak?? hey ho !!

I agree with your OH. Old microwaves leak and should be taken to the nearest recycling centre. Newer ones are far more energy efficient as well.

I also agree with chucking one that's more than 20 years old. It's unlikely to work efficiently and could leak microwave radiation. There's only a small risk of that, so don't panic... but as you can buy a spiffy new one for £50 I think it would be silly to hang onto it.

Microwaves aren't the godsend we thought they were 30 years ago, they're shit at cooking most things and take up far too much kitchen real estate IMO. But brilliant for defrosting food, steaming veg and warming up a cup of milk or stock.

Anyone know anything about these compact ovens that combine conventional cooking with microwave. They are pricey
