Is there a book that tells you the basics of cleaning?

I have several books that tell me how to do things cheaply, or in an environmentally friendly way, but I need the basics - how often should I clean things? What do I use where? how exactly do you use a toilet brush? Can a hoover be used on a hard floor or not? How often should windows be cleaned, and how?

I do all these things, but I have no idea if I am doing them right. every now and again I come across something on here that had never even occured to me, like turning mattresses. I don't want my kids to pick up bad habits, so I need to get sorted out now.

I think Kim and Aggie have written a book - presumably it's pretty basic?

hocuspontas · 30/04/2011 10:31

I'm interested in this. DD1 is moving into a shared house in September and I'm not the person to ask where cleaning is concerned!

Butterpiecrimearea · 30/04/2011 10:34

I " don't want to mention something in passing to a friend and them say"you do WHAT???

Somebody (an American, I think) produced exactly this book a few years ago for precisely the reasons you mentioned. Unfortunately, I can remember neither the name of the book nor the author. So: not very helpful but at least you know that the book exists.

Home Comforts by Cheryl Mendelson is very good......I have read it, im just lazy/slattern Blush

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/04/2011 13:46

Rachel simhon did one called the housewife's manual or housework manual I read it thinking I would hate it but it's really good. I got mine off amazon I think it's out of print now but it was a new copy. HTH

Any of Don Aslett's books are fantastic! Simple, effective and timesaving in the long run! Tia.

Or try Flylady website, I think there are a few threads on here about ladies who use that method.

Seconding Rachel Simhon 'The Housewife's Handbook', i love it, it's actually an enjoyable read and has everything you need to know and great tips. You can get it here www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?hl=en&q=the+housewife's+handbook&wrapid=tljp1304367328248339&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=18026775269804806005&sa=X&ei=9BC_TdrnJcyq8AO90c3EBQ&sqi=2&ved=0CEQQ8wIwBQ#

Have just ordered the Rachel Simhon book off Amazon. Looks good! Thanks both of you for the recommendation.

Express housekeeping - a Dorling Kindersley book - is fab with really basic stuff, step by step, colour photos etc
See here www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/140536307X/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?ie=UTF8&m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE
Dont know how to post links but hopefully that might work....

sorky · 05/05/2011 18:22

I received the Rachel Simhon book today.....is fab (hb from Amazon £3.63, new)

Loving the schedules, even if they are a bit Bree van der Camp Grin

Highly recommended.

Pagwatch · 05/05/2011 18:29

Home Comforts is fabulous.
But it reads so well that I sit and read it instead of, you know, actually doing it.

Like my whole watching fitness DVDs with a cup of coffee and a nice biscuit thing

AnnoyingOrange · 05/05/2011 18:37

I have Kim and Aggie's How Clean is Your House

www.amazon.co.uk/How-Clean-Your-House-Woodburn/dp/0718146999

Seabright · 05/05/2011 23:37

Another vote for Home Comforts. It's brilliant in that it covers everything, but also slightly depressing when I realise I will never live up to Cheryl Mendleson's standards

Indaba · 06/05/2011 22:15

Rita Konig book rock.
