Have two boys prones to weeing mishaps, a lot. I put in a loo blue thing in the cistern, one that hangs over the side, daily put bleachy loo cleaner stuff down and clean the floor all the time.

And it still smells!

It currently has a bowl of lemon and lime wedges in it.

I have said 98 billion times at least to keep the pee in the bowl but it's a loosing battle.

Any top Martha Stewart type tips ot reccomended products?

PS: both boys have asthma issues, so have to avoid the masking glade type febreeze sprays etc

I've found dettol floor cleaning very good at getting rid of nasty niffs round the toilet. I also have 2 ds's and a dp who all see to find it impossible to get all their wee inside the bowl. I have threatened them with having to wee in the garden but I think my ds's thought that was more of a treat than a punishment.

cyb · 28/04/2011 19:39

get them to pee sitting down

tutu100 · 28/04/2011 19:40

dettol floor cleaner that should have said. Not sure how it is for asthmatics though. It's not an overpowering smell, it just seems to work really well at getting rid of the smell of wee.

eggyminniewhingesagain · 28/04/2011 19:40

Those balls you can put in the loo to aim at?

Get them to pee sitting down? My DS is starting a bit of potty training and he gets on the loo and shouts Willy Down! to make sure it lands in the toilet rather than running down his legs [csmile]

ogredownstairs · 28/04/2011 19:41

Not really, but watching with interest! I find spraying and wiping the lid and seat with Febreze Pets helps - I know it's meant for fabrics but it's safe on plastics, which do seem to retain the smell of pee.

carocaro · 28/04/2011 19:43

DS1 is 9 today! and DS2 is 4 and both think sitting down wee is girly and it's a no no.

So sick on sitting down on a pissed dribbled toilet seat too as they leave it to the last min to wee so don't have time to lift the seat, am gonna makea big sign telling them to list the f'ing seat!

When the loo in our en suite finally gets plumbed in (3 years in the waiting) I am gonna put a lock on the door and only I will be allowed to use it!

You need to wipe under lid daily at least. That's where it gathers.
Aslo wipe down the toilet itself. Some people put a pingpong ball in the toilet and tell the kid to aim at that.

moondog · 28/04/2011 19:45

Why 3 years Caro?

tutu100 · 28/04/2011 19:48

my ds2 sits down, doesn't make any difference. he still somehow managed to shoot wee out from between the loo seat and the toilet cistern.

Al0uiseG · 28/04/2011 19:52

Dettol Sea Minerals. Fill the basin, wet some kitchen paper and wipe over everywhere on the loo. Maybe take the seat off and have a hot water and dettol wash over where the fixings are.

What's on the floor? Could it be getting under tiles/Lino/carpet?

carocaro · 29/04/2011 14:52

Thanks all, floor is Karndene.

3 years moonsdog as en suite needs tiling and shower, sink and look fitting, but due running out of cash when extension done and then due to redundancy for both me and DH, cash has been short to finish off! Can't plumb in the loo until it's tiled, cant't afford tiles or tiler, need a shower, but have the screen and tray!

Sure it will be worth the wait!

Thornelius · 29/04/2011 22:39

This sounds like my loo! my 2 ds's age 5 & 6 are useless at lifting the seat up and would rather look around the room at boring bottles than concentrate on their aim!
I'll try the dettol, I have been using bleach but it ends up smelling like a public toilet,
Good luck carocaro!!

Al0uiseG · 30/04/2011 10:30

Top toilet tip, when you replace sanitary ware, install a wall mounted loo. No part of it touches the floor making it easier to keep clean.

LordOfTheFlies · 08/05/2011 20:22

I tried those 'disc' things that you squeeze a blob of cleaner onto the loo to avoid using the germy cage(toilet duck I think).I hadn't reckoned on DS 11 yo.Little bugger saw it as his sole mission to sandblast them off with his caustic stream of weeConfused

ledkr · 08/05/2011 20:39

Is i quite an old toilet? Mine smells now and then,i put bleach around it under the rim too leave for ages then scrub and repeat,i this doesnt work do it with one of the more heavy duty limescale removal cleaners,i find this works for a few weeks then has to be done again, its worked on friends loos too.

NorksAreMessy · 08/05/2011 20:43

Wee on the seat needs to be removed by the wee-er, no matter the age or sex.

stofstg · 08/05/2011 21:14

@ lordoftheflies - i toyed with trying those toilet duck gluey things but was put off when my friend said she caught her lo touching it. I find a plug in air freshner works best for me.

QuintessentialPains · 08/05/2011 21:17

It is possibly caused by the water which has gathered in the "bowl" you use to keep your loobrush in....

SherbetDibDab · 08/05/2011 21:18

What happens to those ping pong ball things when someone does a great big poo on top of them?

peachybums · 08/05/2011 22:09

I had same problem just replaced toilet seat and smell has gone! Think it was the actual seat that was holding onto the smell

thederkinsdame · 09/05/2011 10:55

Also, do you wipe the outside of the toilet bowl when you clean? Dribbles running down the outside cause the smell here.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 09/05/2011 10:58

@ Quintessential. Naughty naughty. Grin

Conserve · 10/05/2011 11:17

I had/have 3 sons and a husband.
I was always on a mission when they were small and would have loved to just instal a urinal to solve this problem.

Most effective was to take up the toilet pan and fit new floor covering. So not to cut around it. I would also slide a single width length of loo roll under by the floor and this would draw out any wee that had seeped underneath.

I found if the LID was always down they were more likely to lift both up to pee as they HAD to do that to pee.

So nag them to put the lid down when finished and lower it yourself when passing and eventually it may work. It does get better as they get older.
