Cleaning vintage linen and lace

I have just inherited a vintage (possibly antique) christening gown that was found stuffed in a plastic bag. It has a few stains on it and some yellowing. The gown is a very delicate cotton/ linen with some lacework too.

What's the safest way to get it clean and white again? I'd happily send it to a specialist (and pay for the privalege) so any recommendations welcomed if it's not a DIY job.

It must be possible - after all, you never see a royal in a dirty christening gown (see last week's Hello! for exhibits A and B [cgrin]) - I just don't know how!

Thank you!

I'd send it off to a good cleaners, normally use Johnsons myself. Do not do as my dp's gran did and stick a 95 year old lace christening gown in the washing machine then throw it out when it gets ruined Angry

Sorry thats not helpful I know, i'm just bitter.

I've just done this: bought some pure soap flakes (easy obtainable from tesco, savers etc) and melted them in a jug with boiling water, then added them to cool in a basin to make a soapy tepid mix. Put in gown and gently adgitatded (can't spell as I've had tow bottle of Newky Brown) and swished about. Rishes in cool water (3 bottles now) and put between two towels to blot out excess water and put it outside in sunshine on a rack with a towel underneath.
bobs yer uncle, fanny's yer aunt etc

I am a bit drunk but it is good advice..proimise

not sure about cleaning but lace is supposed to be kept in blue paper not white to prevent fading or something.
