Preferably not too expensive!
I was looking at vax pet one but don't know if they are any good. I have a greyhound and a jack Russell. Plus 4 dc lol.
Current dyson has split in pipe and broken catch on cylinder.

aid bagless but henry hoovers are fab, they do a stronger more sucky one too which might be good for you.

TotorosOcarina · 24/04/2011 20:16

*i know you said ....

TheVisitor · 24/04/2011 20:20

Henry is God in my house. The Vax ones work well, but the plastic on them is very easy to snap.

Carrotsandcelery · 24/04/2011 20:20

I found the Dyson absolutely hopeless tbh. We invested in a Sebo but it is £££ and has bags. It is totally fantastic though, doesn't loose suction and our last one lasted over 15 years. We gave up on our Dyson after about 18 months as it just didn't suck it all up.

The one I recommend ishere

I realise it is neither inexpensive or bagless though. [bublush]

TortoiseVEasterBunny · 24/04/2011 20:26

Thanks.
It's the expense of bags that I don't want plus I will no doubt forget to buy more! And depends how easy bags are to get or where from.

I have actually had the Dyson about 6 yrs so it has done well. Not had a problem with it as long as I give it a good bang when emptying it to clear out the fine dust filter. Get loads of fine dust out of it. Just not working well since pipe split.

You can buy Sebo bags on amazon if that is at all helpful.

I know many people who swear by their Henry's too though.

TotorosOcarina · 24/04/2011 20:43

i GET BAGS FROM OUR LOCAL CHEAPO SHOP, NOT OFFICIAL HENRY ONES, ITS ABOUT £1 EACH

oops caps sorry,

if we run short DH empties the bag and tapes it up to use again Grin

TheVisitor · 24/04/2011 20:43

I buy my Henry bags in Poundstretcher. They're generic ones that work just as well as the branded ones. My Henry deals with 4 mucky kids, one mucky DH and 3 cats, including a longhaired one who leaves his bodyweight of fur every time he lies down.

If you're fond of your dyson though, you can buy new hoses.

Cakeybaker · 24/04/2011 20:46

I've got a Dyson Animal and I really like it. You can buy a new pipe from the Dyson website (I did that and got another 18 months out of my last one) ask them about the catch as well they may have a fix for it.

TortoiseVEasterBunny · 24/04/2011 20:54

I did like the old one but really feel it needs replacing now.

bumpybecky · 24/04/2011 20:58

I collected our new hoover yesterday, a replacement for the Miele cat dog which was fab for pet hair, not so good for human hair (have 3 dds with v long hair).

This time we also wanted bagless due to costs, chosing was stupidly hard work, there are just so many to look at Confused in the end we went for this one by Samsung
it sucks up lots of yuck :) carpets are looking loads cleaner. Haven't tried all the attachments yet though

Decided on that one as reviews were good, has 5 year warantee and tesco clubcard exchange thing on, so free with magic tesco points :)

TortoiseVEasterBunny · 24/04/2011 22:01

Looks good but what is best, small one like that or upright? Only ever had an upright Hoover.

OP posts:
bumpybecky · 24/04/2011 22:08

I think upright ones are supposed to be better at cleaning, but not so easy to manage on the stairs. We're in a townhouse, so lots of stairs!

CeliaFate · 25/04/2011 08:20

I bought the Vax mach air and it's very light, suction's good and it has a button to turn the brush on or off for carpets or hard floors. It's smaller capacity, but very easy to empty so I don't find that a problem.

TortoiseVEasterBunny · 25/04/2011 08:26

I think that was one of the ones I was looking at. Can't get link to work.

I know a bit about vacuum cleaners as I run a price comparison website! I've had a look at the Which reviews and have a couple of suggestions. You could look at the Bosch BSGL400 www.justvacuumcleaners.com/index.php?ps=bsgl4000&sv=1&x=7&y=6, which is a cylinder model. Good for picking up pet hairs, a good all round cleaner and not too expensive at around £100.
Miele do a good range too www.justvacuumcleaners.com/compare_miele.html - the models that come out best in the reviews are the S4212 turbo and the Cat and Dog models.
The Dyson models that come out best are the DC25 Ball Animal and the DC 25 multi-floor. www.justvacuumcleaners.com/compare_dyson.html
I have a Dyson myself which I've had for years and I love it. (I also have a very hairy dog and I've just ordered the dog grooming tool to go with it!) Dysons cost a bit more but they do last a long time.
The Vax Pet model doesn't do so well in the reviews. They say that it's good on pet hairs but poor on stairs and floorboards.
Hope this helps! If you don't like the look of any of these, let me know what you have on your shortlist and I'll look up the reviews.

schroeder · 25/04/2011 09:20

If you get the vax mach air one make sure you get the 'reach' one as the normal one has a very short tube on it, that is pretty annoying. [buhmm]

It works very well though and I love the way it empties.

CeliaFate · 25/04/2011 09:24

I looked at the Which website. The Bosch vacuum came out on top, but the customer reviews said it was awful!
I'd look on Amazon and read the real reviews.

TortoiseVEasterBunny · 25/04/2011 09:31

Thanks for all that info.
Why do reviews vary so much? Lots saying something is good than lots saying its rubbish!
Will look up the ones I like the look of and post them here.

Which recommends the Miele Cat & Dog TT 5000 (S5261) at £199. In fact most of their best buys are Miele.

NanaB2010 · 25/04/2011 10:15

I generally find Which quite good because they carry out proper testing, not just one person's opinion, but I do usually look at reviews on the various online store websites as well. Mind you, these area a bit like looking up the holiday hotel you've just booked on Trip Advisor and finding that 95% of people loved it and the other 5% thought it was the worst place they'd ever stayed!

Bunbaker · 25/04/2011 18:12

"but I do usually look at reviews on the various online store websites as well"

Same here. Last week I bought a lawn mower that was a Which Best Buy, but also recommended by other users and am really pleased with it.

bilblio · 27/04/2011 21:52

I love my dyson. I know lots of people who say they lose suction but if you wash out the filter they're fantastic again. I bought a new hose for mine from a local hoover repair place, I think it was about £15.

I hate henry's (although they look cute) we had one at uni and I was forever having to take it apart to unclog it. Okay I have to do that a lot with the dyson (DH's plectrums, DD's small toys and random pieces of food she's hidden) But at the dyson comes apart much easier, and into more bits so it's easier to get the plectrums/toys/bits of stale toast out. :o
