Have also posted in Education...

DD 16, bright, doing Highers in Business Management, Economics, English, Drama and Biology has decided not to go to university but wants instead to be an interior designer. Don't know if it's best for her to find a course or to try to find an established firm that will take her on as a trainee.

I've only ever used BIDA accredited designers. She could give them a ring and see what they say. Plus, phone up a few designers currently working and ask for 2 minutes of their time to find out what their routes into the job were. She could make some good contacts along the way too.

I did the KLC Interior Diploma Design Course 12 years ago. I was 30 and needed to retrain. In fact, the course consisted of many "mature" students, but there were those straight out of school too.

Basically, I needed to have done the course to get a foot in the door of a good Interior Design company as a trainee / first job (very low paid- but needed the experience), which I did. The longer the design course (mine was basically a years course, but I did already have a BA), then the better chance one had of getting a job. The KLC helped enormously in getting me an interview for a job, which thankfully I got. I appreciated their help.

Interior Design is hugely competitive as extremely popular right now.
