So DP says I am manky for...

  1. Washing everything at 40
  2. Using water/vinegar to clean instead of anti bacterial stuff
  3. Only washing outdoor windows with wiper thingy when it rains
  4. Using sopa nuts instead of powder/conditioner
  5. Not seperating towels/bedding/underwear in laundry.

Please tell me I am not?

I generally try to keep the house clean and tidy ( Neither of us arethe cleanest or tidiest of people though so an hour throughout the day is plenty for me!) but am sick wasting money on anti bacterial shite and polish/air fresheners that make me gag and feel like I am suffocating.

I asked him if he thought everyone died in the olden days because their was no anti bac or bloody boil washes, his reply was no but there have been advancements... yes in advertising apparently... Hmm:o

No you are not manky! Very sensible for keeping the chemicals to a minimum though, what's the problem washing at 40? The only thing I was at 60 is my works uniform and dd2's nappies (not at the same time).

soppypreggyloon · 11/04/2011 08:11

not manky!

maybe he should be in charge of cleaning if he's worried about he levels of cleanliness at home? Grin
i'd love it if mine took over but he's even more slack than me!

DaisySteiner · 11/04/2011 08:40

Boil washes will knacker your clothes! I'm with him on the soapnuts though - they just don't get your clothes bright and smelling nice.

CeliaFate · 11/04/2011 09:47

It's not manky, it's very eco. Germs only die at 60 degrees+ though so I'd wash towels and bedding at a higher temp. I love the smell of washing powder and I'm a sucker for a new product. A marketing man's dream!

frantic51 · 11/04/2011 09:56

There were plenty of boil washes in the "olden days"! You've obviously never used and old "copper"! Grin. I don't think that it's necessary to separate underwear and towels/ bed linen provided you wash them at 60 degrees or more. Soap nuts, don't work in my experience. Vinegar is fine except I, personally, can't stand the smell! Grin

greentig3r · 11/04/2011 16:43

Nope, not manky! I do all those, except 3. which I think is fab!

schroeder · 11/04/2011 16:46

As there are always airborne germs about; I can't see the need for bedding and towels to be sterilised. Have I missed something? Confused.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 11/04/2011 16:47

I wash everything at 40, never use any of the other settings!

LineOnTheLeftOneCrossEach · 11/04/2011 16:50

I wash everything at 40 except for a white wash at 60 once a week. If I don't do this the washing machine isn't cleared of germs and it starts to smell/makes the washing smell. I also run soda crystals through the wash whenever I do a heavily stained load which also clears the machine out. Otherwise, same as you.

winnybella · 11/04/2011 16:51

schroeder- I guess the idea is that you'll have germs from wiping your bum etc on towels and sex fluids on your bedding therefore you should wash it at 60 or more degrees.

I do bedding and towels at 60, tea towels at 90 (as often use them to wipe hands while handling raw meat etc) and the rest at 30-40.

Ragwort · 11/04/2011 16:51

If your DP is so interested in the cleaning and laundry processes why doesn't he take over? I can't imagine my DH even knowing, let alone caring, what I use to clean windows etc Grin. I also wash everything on 40 - can't be bothered to change the settings.

In what sort of context are you having these discussions? (mind boggles !!).

Sarahandmolly · 11/04/2011 18:15

Nope not a skank at all! I only wash my whites at 60, everything else is at either 30 or 40! Also, the use of chemicals to a minimum is good... I should do that too but I am a sucker for the bleach smell! Blush

MrsOliverQueen · 11/04/2011 22:30

I'm with ragwort, how DID this all come up in conversation?

We have one window in the house that has not been washed for at least a year, I don't think DH has noticed TBH, as long as he can see out of the windows and find clean socks he's happy enough.

upyourdiva · 12/04/2011 09:03

Just to be clear we don't sit around talking about cleaning all night, (relationships not that stale yet :o) DP cleans the floors on a saturday morning and he went to clean the windows the other day because it was sunny but mentioned he could'nt find any window cleaner or anti bac floor cleaner and I pointed out that I just give the wiindows a quick going over when it rains and use water/vinegar/lemon juice for surfaces and floors.

He pulled a Hmm face and said that was just odd and just one of my weird skanky ways along with saving the planet with soap nuts :o

To be fair he did'nt say it nastily just confused and jokingly IYSWIM.
