How do I make my house smell fresh and clean?

I open the windows, I polish hoover and mop regularly. I change the bedding and towels frequently. But it still never smells fresh and clean. At the moment it's a mixture of feet, food and the cat (boak).

I'd prefer to use something natural rather than sprays/plug ins, but I'm at a loss at the moment.

Cut a lemon up, put it in a saucepan with boiling water, and simmer it for a couple of hours. If you like cinnamon, put some of that in too. It goes through the whole house and smells lovely.

I am told that white vinegar absorbs bad smells too although the lemon idea sounds much more appealing.
I have also been told that rubbing a little fabric softener on the back of radiators helps - I am sure you could do it with a fresh smelling essential oil for a more natural scent.
My house always smells of cooking and guinea pig though, no matter what I do.

I've just found these recipes for natural air freshener, so I'll give that a go.

You've got to have the windows open a lot. The house smells wonderful on on a windy day.
(dh just gets told to put on a jumper if he protests at the cold...)

I open the windows as soon as I get up (otherwise whole house seems to smell like grotty husband) - are you drying the bedding and towels outside? If not it might make a difference?

Also I stole this tip from on here - essential oil on cotton wool inside the hoover. seems to be making a bit of a difference.)

I like to burn essential oils in a candle burner, permeates through whole house.

Use lovely fabric conditioner and hang clothes off warm radiator....

Essential oil on back of radiators or lightbulbs.

Carpet cleaning, upholstery cleaning and curtain cleaning will go a long way. Plus do something about smelly shoes and take things out from under beds. Check closets and wardrobes for musty smells, maybe get rid of some old clothes and coats you no longer wear. Turn the mattresses.

If you have a slow cooker, put that on with some water and some bicarb (lid off). MUCH cheaper than water on the stove.

I like to use these

scent diffusers

Totally yummy!

Pesto how long do they last? Which ones do you recommend?

PestoEatsSurfersAndPasties · 12/04/2011 18:58

I've had mine over a year now and it's still not run out Shock I particularly like the Seychelles one Smile

here are some other suggestions, the ones I use.

White vinegar really is an odour eater.

What's your mop like? An old mouldy mop could be the cause of the smelly feet smell?
