Accessing bedroom through ensuite bathroom

Is this a really pants idea? Our bedroom currently has one door going in from a funny little landing thing in the hallway, and one going into the en suite. En suite also has a door further down the landing corridor.

The house was once part of a much bigger Victorian villa, and was divided up in the 60's - and this bit was done badly imo. It makes it very difficult to get the layout right in our bedroom. There are also two large windows and fireplace to contend with.

So, I was thinking of having the doorway to the bedroom from the landing blocked up, and having access to the bedroom through the bathroom.

Question is - would it put you off if you were looking at a large 4 bed house that you had to get into the master bedroom through its en suite??

I would rather it wasn't en-suite!

mylovelymonster · 26/03/2011 20:13

Re your question - are you thinking of doing this for yourselves? Or in preparation to sell? I wouldn't do it if preparing to sell. Sounds most odd.

deliakate · 26/03/2011 20:22

I want to do it to make the bedroom more useable, and a beautiful room for us. We might sell in 3-5 years time, so don't want to make the house less appealing to others either.

No i wouldn't want to access bedroom from en suite.

Access to en suite from bedroom is fine though.

mylovelymonster · 26/03/2011 20:32

Do it then! How would you do it? Leave the doorframe in place but block up door space with a bit of boarding like a new bit of stud partition - easier to reinstate door if prospective buyer wanted to? Make a feature out of it? Painting? Bookcase/shelves? Are you or do you have a functional DIYer in the house or would you get someone in?

thisisyesterday · 26/03/2011 20:33

yeah it would put me off cos if dp was having a shit i wouldn't be able to get into my room!

i would take the en suite out altogether, if you have a nice family bathroom too. or just block the door from bedroom to en suite and make it another normal bathroom

mylovelymonster · 26/03/2011 20:38

Have to have a new house rule - ensuite for tinkles only!!

Fluffycloudland77 · 26/03/2011 22:13

If your going to sell then don't do it. Just have a bigger bedroom if you can.

CeliaFate · 27/03/2011 11:20

I wouldn't like the idea at all, it would put me off buying it.

ChasingSquirrels · 27/03/2011 11:22

can't you just not use the door - blocking it with furniture if you want, but leave it there.
They you will see whether it works for you.

deliakate · 28/03/2011 16:29

Well, whether or not we do it is going to guide our purchase of new bedroom furniture. If we do it, we can get fantastic, big stuff that will really give us fantastic storage and a great look. If not, it'll be a compromise and the furniture will have to all be differently sized and a bit cramped down one end of the room.....

Personally, I utterly loathe en-suites with more than one door. I just can't settl in and relax, even if I've checcked both doors are properly locked! But I guess that could just be me....

I'd hate to not be able to get into the bedroom if someone was using the ensuite - I'd think it was better to block off the door from bedroom and bathroom, and just go through the door from the hallway, making it an ordinary bathroom rather than an ensuite. Then you can have your larger furniture.

Maelstrom · 28/03/2011 16:41

It depends... on how well it is done. Top end of the range, very stylish, like a boutique hotel, maybe... (they seem to be getting away with "studio toilets" were the toilet and shower are in the middle of the room. In my way that's way worse!)

But if it is going to be a little cramped space, difficult to go through, no, leave the door.

PlasticLentilWeaver · 28/03/2011 16:41

What would happen if one person us using the en suite, and the other wants to get in or out of the bedroom? Not everyone is comfortable with sharing their bodily functions. I would never buy a house with that lay out.

wahwahwah · 28/03/2011 16:44

I would have it as a walk in wardrome. A bit like the Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe.

JollySergeantJackrum · 28/03/2011 16:47

I'm fairly sure you.wouldn't get building control approval for this as bedrooms all have to have direct access to a hall and cannot be accessed through.another room. This would make your house more difficult to sell. Check with your local council.though.

deliakate · 28/03/2011 16:50

What would you have as a wiw, wahwah?

There is a loo literally just across the landing where DH mainly goes to the loo (tmi!). Its a lovely big bathroom... and at a push, it could be made smaller and a sort of turning corner bit added to make two doors next to one another into bedroom and bathroom.

Hmm, I think on balance though, without spending £££ to do that, the access would put most ppl off
