Mold, how do I get rid of it for good?

DH and I moved into a rented flat back in December and noticed a tiny patch of mold on the corner of our bedroom. Wiped it off and thought that was that. Then we started noticing that all the windows in the flat were covered in condensation, even with heating on. The water from the windows pooled on the window-ledges so we kept wiping it away.
We let the landlord know and he fitted vents in the wondows that we keep open all the time, which didn't help.
At the start of January we decided to clean the whole flat ready for when we brought DS home from hospital (DS is now 9wks) and noticed that behind our bed and bedside tables, disgusting black/brown/green mold had grown and had basically covered the whole area! We let the landlord know again, cleaned it off with bleach and LL provided a dehumidifier (sp!).
The LL has been great, but the mold is back and growing on the wall. DH and I are both suffering from a cough that won't completely go away and I'm worried that it's the mold that's making us ill! DS sleeps in our room and I'm worried about the health effects its having on him too.
LL got someone to come out who said that the mold is surface mold caused by condensation, but even with the dehumidifier it still seems to come back. Our bedroom, where the problem is worst is a cold room and never seems to really build any heat.

So basically my long-winded question is how should I clean this mold and prevent it from coming back? Sorry for the long post, just wanted to give as much info as I could!

I sympathise. Our house has this problem too and the only thing you can do is to heat, dehumidify and ventilate well. Clean the mould off with mould & mildew spray, anything else won't kill the spores. Keep furniture away from walls, particulary outside ones and don't store food in cupboards against external walls.

Don't dry washing on radiators and use your dehumidifier when you have washing hanging indoors. Use extractor fans when you're having baths or showers or using your tumble drier.

We get mould growing on the bottom of our sofas and inside cupboards. I had to throw away lots of photographs that were affected Sad. I keep on top of the problem but it's horrible and this is the only house I've lived in that's been like this. And our windows run with condensation in the cold weather and have to be wiped dry every morning.

with mould this extensive I would try to move out as soon as possible.
probably the walls are wet, which is something you cannot do anything about by heating etc.
it can be dangerous for baby, it can cause allergies and asthma.

hormonesnomore which mold/mildew spray do you use and are you happy with it? I love this house and really don't want to move, but unless I can keep the mould at bay I'll be leaving. Don't want DS getting ill from it!

We moved out of our old flat for the same problem (except it also had bugs and the mould was a lot worse).

Thanks for all the advice, I was tearing my hair out over it! Wine:o

We have this problem and do exactly as Hormonesnomore says.

I too am tearing my hair out over it, it is disgusting in't it. We run 2 dehumidifyers one upstairs and one down. We keep furniture well away from the external walls. We can't use the spare room for a bedroom as it is really bad in there.

Everytime i see a patch growing i die a little inside. Evil stuff!! Angry

We have a big photo frame on the external wall going up the stairs and ive just noticed a few spots of mould on the wall around the frame. Im too scared to take it off because the last time i did i saw the worst patch of furry mould i have ever seen!!!!!!! Shock I cleaned it off with dettol mould and mildew remover (bright green bottle if you want to look for it in the shops) and haven't checked it since.

I just thank god we are renting this place and didn't buy it!! It is disgusting you have my sympathy.

Yuck! Just last night I spotted some creaping from behind my bookshelf in the living room. Moved it forward and it was like a green furry carpet up my wall! Surely the LL has a duty to get the place damp proofed or something?

I use Dettol mould & mildew remover but I've heard the cheaper Astonish one is good too.

I own my house (well, along with the mortgage company!) and so I'm determined to beat the problem. I left my heating on all day every day in the winter months and have noticed less mould because of that. Haven't had the bills yet though!

Yes, also forgot to mention - don't hang pictures/photos on external walls, they'll go mouldy too Sad

Some of my rooms are better than others - our bathroom isn't affected strangely enough, perhaps because it has an extractor fan.

Could you, DH & DS sleep in another room OP? If your health is affected, perhaps you need to be looking at somewhere else to live.
