Best vacuum cleaner?

TaffetaCat · 25/03/2011 09:43

Really had it with our Dyson. Have a completely wood floor downstairs, carpeted stairs and upstairs and want one vacuum that can do the lot. One cat who doesn't shed much.

I'm used to bagless upright but could be swayed.....looking at the previous threads on here it looks like Miele and Sebo come out well, but which sort would I plump for?

Any tips/help appreciated.

Hello!

We've noticed this thread is quite old and some of the product recommendations are a little out of date. We've spent weeks speaking to parents and testing out vacuum cleaners, so here is the best vacuum cleaner on the market as recommended by Mumsnetters.

Hope this helps! Flowers

Sebo. Mine is 11 yrs old and copes very well with different floors - wood, carpet, tiles. It also coped very well with cat hair for 8 yrs (when the last cat died - nothing to do with the Sebo). It isn't too heavy and doesn't pull out carpet threads (something that every carpet salesman and fitter say about Dysons. It is very easy to change the bag and filters without covering yourself in dust.

TaffetaCat · 25/03/2011 09:48

Thanks Mollie, what sort of Sebo? Upright or cylinder?

Sebo - they last forever and are really powerful. We have a dog and it has no trouble at all with that. We had a Dyson before and it didn't even compare. The carpet was visibly cleaner as I pushed the sebo over it, even though I had just hoovered with the hated Dyson.
The bag changing is cleaner than cleaning out a Dyson too and the whole thing is just so much better quality.

It costs more but our first one lasted more than 15 years and is still in use for the car etc.

We have a little independent electrical retailer/repairer near us and the chap in there said to me there is only one 'hoover' he would ever recommend - and that is a Sebo. He said that Dysons are having more and more problems since they moved production, the older ones are reliable but the ones you can buy now arent apparently.

TaffetaCat · 25/03/2011 09:55

Something like this then?

Taffeta that is the hoover we have and I can, hand on heart, thoroughly recommend it. I can take the extended hose all the way up the stairs while the hoover sits at the bottom no problem at all and we have a weird twisty windy staircase too. Mine came with an extra head for the hose that has brushes on it that get deeper into the stairs etc. The cable is also long. I can get all the way round downstairs without having to unplug and we have bedrooms downstairs (bungalow chalet so only on 2 floors at one end of the house). I hoover every day because of the dog and have only changed the bag once so far. We have had it 3 months. If you can afford it then go for it.

TaffetaCat · 25/03/2011 11:23

Ooh thanks Carrots I think its the one

2 quick q's if you don't mind:

Whats it like on wooden floors?
What does it come with? ie any replacement bags?

We have wooden floors in our kitchen, dining room and family room and it is great on them. We also have a slate floor and a smooth tiled floor and it is great with them too. You have no worries there. It adjusts according to the floor it is on. It sucks closer to the skirting boards than my Dyson did but I do still get the hose out to do the very edges. The hose is much easier to take out and put in while you go along than the Dyson so that is not the faff it sounds.
It came with a normal length hose and an extra long hose. It had all the little gadgets for attaching to the hose and the big head for the stairs that I mentioned. It also came with a few bags and a spare filter.
I bought mine on Amazon as it had the best price.

Ha ha! I am amused by how much I love my hoover! Grin

TaffetaCat · 25/03/2011 13:02

Wonderful, thanks Carrots. I've bought it!

I hope you like it. I have just done a tour with mine Grin

My Sebo is an upright but you can get a long hose thing so it stays at the bottom of the stairs when I want to hoover the stairs.

The Sebo Taffeta linked is the one my mum has. It gets industrial use (she hoovers at least twice a day!) and, like mine, has lasted really well.

palomadove · 26/03/2011 09:55

Miele Cat & Dog - it's brilliant and miles better than the Dyson we used to have. Don't know about a Sebo.

We also have one of these robotic cleaners. Expensive, but worth every penny - it's like having an extra person helping with the cleaning.

You do need to do the stairs and skirting boards with a conventional cleaner though. I'm thinking of getting the floor washing robot too, although dh is worried it wouldn't be good for our wooden floors.

JoyceBarnaby · 26/03/2011 10:06

I'm also looking at vacuum cleaners at the mo - could I just ask how heavy the Sebo is? Is it easy to lift around the house?

TaffetaCat · 26/03/2011 13:48

Joyce - mine hasn't arrived yet, but from what I've read it has excellent engineering so although heavy it doesn't feel it, glides effortlessly etc, unless you carry it up the stairs.

OP posts:
Carrotsandcelery · 26/03/2011 13:57

Joyce I have the sebo and it sort of pulls itself along when you are hoovering so doesn't feel heavy. I have a shoulder injury and can be troubled by things like hoovering but with this hoover I am fine.
I can manage to lift it up our twisty windy staircase too but I wouldn't like to carry it for hours. I would be the same with any hoover mind you.

JoyceBarnaby · 26/03/2011 22:00

Thanks ladies - I am seriously considering this one!

melaniePJ · 05/01/2012 22:28

Hi TaffetaCat,
How are you finding the Sebo?-I'm thinking of getting one as my Dyson has no suction! Thanks

HappyWilly · 08/01/2012 00:35

I have the Sebo you linked to and it is almost 10 yrs old, never had any problems with it. The only thing that I don't like about it is that it sometimes becomes a bit unstable when using the hose and falls over (and hits me) so I now lie it down when I hoover the stairs/the car/upholstery etc.

slowburner · 08/01/2012 11:44

I came onto MN today t ask about another vacuum cleaner, ours is a Henry and although only 7 years old is just useless on the carrots we have in our rental. DH wants to get a carpet cleaner but I reckon if we get a decent Hoover then we won't need an expensive carpet cleaner too.

Off to look at a sebo...
