Simple question - do I need both?

No. But you do need a Kenwood Chef which does both jobs - is a fab mixer, a great processor bit and a great (glass) blender.

But really, depends what you want to make. Mixers are great for cakes, bread, whipping stuff. Processors good for cutting stuff (slicing, grating, shredding; and pastry).

I want both. Does that help Wink

I've already got a Kitchen Aid so it's too late for a Kenwood Chef (plus the Kitchen Aid is much prettier out on the side) so I just need the processor bit now.

I keep dropping hints to DH but no luck yet

I treated myself when I moved into my own house 8 years ago and have both and I would not be without either.

Pinkcushion · 25/03/2011 16:22

Yes you need both, they do different jobs.

Blatherskite · 25/03/2011 16:24

Do you have a Magi Mix model recommendation? amazon preferably so i can add it straight to my wishlist Grin

I have the 5200 xl but we are a big (ish) family. What can a kitchen aid do that a Magimix can't ?

ttalloo · 25/03/2011 20:18

I've got the Magimix 5200xl and it's brilliant for chopping (and also for making some cakes) - I've also got a Kenwood Chef, which I use for making cakes and whisking cream and eggs.

I'm actually now thinking of getting the Kitchenaid blender, even though I could get an attachment for my Kenwood Chef, because I read somewhere that the KA blender is the best around. And it looks gorgeous.

McDreamy · 25/03/2011 20:28

But can't you just use your magimix to blend with that plastic arch thingy?

OP posts:
Blatherskite · 25/03/2011 21:05

Does it have the grater attachment a la Jamie Oliver? I've got the 30 minute cook book and the MagiMix is one of his recommended items that you buy.

He does also dedicate the book to his mate who owns Magi Mix though which made me a bit suspicious Hmm

I have the cheap Classic Kitchen Aid and it comes with a balloon whisk, a beater and a dough hook. I would imagine proper dough would be tough in a Magi Mix. You can buy other attachments for it too. I know there is a meat grinder for making mince but haven't looked into anything else.

dikkertjedap · 26/03/2011 11:52

I have the latest Magimix food processor, it is brilliant - it does all kinds of chopping, dough making, juicing. It replaces my previous foodprocessor, juicer and breadmaker as I baked all the bread in the oven anyway so I could shape it myself. So I have freed up lots of space. Really a brilliant machine and much more powerful then the Kitchen Aid (which does look nicer though).

Lookandlearn · 26/03/2011 17:07

Both needed, although neither really, iyswim! But make sure they can be accessible on surfaces otherwise they won't get used. I use magimix all the time for chopping, pastry, small fairy cakes etc. Kitchen aid could do without but have never regretted buying as it us just lovely!!! Good for the huge batches of cakes I do occasionally and meringues. Not worth the outlay unless you love it- a hand mixer will do as well.

Lookandlearn · 26/03/2011 17:09

Oh and have the kitchen aid blender too Blush bought Pre children all of them. It's great but I hardly use it as stick blender does same job and easier to wash up! Again, it is very smart!

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 26/03/2011 17:15

You need both!

I use my kitchenaid for cakes and puds, the magimix for grating, chopping, making coleslaw, dome cakes, that kind of thing.

I wouldn't be without either.

AhhBisto · 26/03/2011 17:20

ooh I was just going to start a thread on this very subject as my ancient food processor / mixer has just died.

browsing and saw this which looks like it cooks dinner for you, short of bunging anything in the oven. bit pricey though!

toddlerama · 26/03/2011 17:25

Those Kenwood cooking chef are lame. At the goodfood show last year they sold only 2.

We have a magimix, but I have to say I wouldn't say no to a kenwood as well. Would be nice to make bigger batches of cakes. Totally unnecessary, but aren't most kitchen gadgets?
