Why don't my children use their playroom?

Children are 3 and 5.

In our last house we had a tiny playroom and they used it ALL the time.

The new house has a much bigger playroom. It just doesn't work. I'm not sure why.

Please help me work out what to change. I want them to love it and use it.

Rotating toys works well, so keep what you've got but change round what is out every week, or whenever. Having said that, children really like knowing where to find everything, so label things, or if the tubs are not see through put a picture of what is in it on the outside. Things at child level- blackboard wall? Or whiteboard in fact. I think different areas if perfect, you can use furniture to separate off different places. Try to avoid one large space in the middle of the room. Home type corner is lovely of you have a kitchen/dolls that sort of thing. Lots of colour. Dens are always good. Music- cd player maybe? Wish I had a playroom, sigh!

Thought I would come back and update, as you were all kind enough to offer advice.

We took the shelving units and placed them sticking out so they cut the room in half. Much better, and far less overwhelming. We bought some hideous bright carpets, chosen by the children.

We made a den corner with a tent roof and lots of lovely cushions, and their huge soft toys - they LOVE this bit and use it all the time. We put an old cd player in there for them.

We made an art corner with an old red desk, and bought a new swivel chair, so everything is there if they want to paint or draw or do crafts. So far they have used this very responsibly.

We put the puppet show and the dressing up rail near the den corner so if they do a show the audience sits on the comfy cushions.

We put all 2yo ds's trucks and garage and stuff in the little alcove as you come in, so they are all down low and easy for him to get to.

We have put up some pictures and wall stickers. We hung things from the ceiling.

We also took LOADS of stuff away and are storing it close by for rotation.

I am going to get them a nice big cork board or magnetic board for putting up their pictures.

It is so great and they love it. They use it all the time now.

I think the problem was it was too big a space, surrounded by shelves and shelves of toys that sort of loomed over you as you went in. Not very inviting.

If you feel brave could you post a pic? I need some inspiration on this point myself as we have moved, and DD has a big room and I just don't really know what to do with it!
