Does the price of this carpet sound right?!

We have some stairs and a landing to carpet and they just quoted us almost £750!! The carpet itself is £22 a metre but by the time they've added everything else on, this does seem an awful lot (that includes fitting, underlay and everything). Obviously you don't know how big by stairs and landing are but does this price sound reasonable, do you think?! Anybody bought carpet recently?

22 pound a metre!!!

thats very expensive carpet

underlay is quite alot too

have you got a quote with a breakdown of all costs

SixtyFootDoll · 21/03/2011 10:13

That sounds a lot we just had aours done, high wool content carpet, was £350 including fitting

iwantavuvezela · 21/03/2011 10:16

We have just had a quote for our stairs ..... its £400 or so (fitted, underlay etc...) the stairs are just one straight flight up - 2m etres of so

Could you call around and ask for a few other quotes. I think it depends on teh carpet you want - because another carpet i like would have pushed the quote to £570 and then on to over £1000 ....

PassTheTwiglets · 21/03/2011 12:07

Trinity, it's not actually that expensive for a wool carpet - I've seen nothing under £19 and they go up to £40 or so.

60 footdoll, was your stairs and landing?

iwantvuvuezela, was that just for stairs - if so, it makes our quote sound reasonable.

twiglets, I didn't mean you shouldn't be paying that much, I just meant its expensive

as in wool which is expensive

I dream of nice carpets

ethelina · 21/03/2011 12:34

I should get another quote.

PassTheTwiglets · 21/03/2011 12:45

No worries, I know you meant, Trinity - but I don't think it is expensive, having looked at all the various prices. You can get carpet for about £10 but that's horrible stuff that won't last and will give me static shocks! Suppose I will have to look at another place though - so annoying, as I had it all sorted until the quote!

I think it sounds ok, we paid £300 a couple of yrs ago for £8 per meter stuff with underlay, fitting etc.

MrsSharp · 21/03/2011 13:37

I am actually sitting in a carpet shop, right now! We sell decent quality 80/20 wool carpets from upwards of £19 sq mt (including fitting). Ask the retailer to show you what stock carpets they have (should be able to do at a better price). For a normal stairs and landing (you didn't mention including your hall in that), I don't think you'd be looking at more than 12sq mt, plus a stair sur-charge (normally around £40), underlay (decent rubber underlay between £5-£7 sq mt) - you'd still be looking at more like £450 based on a £22 sq mt carpet. Door bars and gripperods would be more if you don't have those - but not much. Also they may have added a charge on for lifting and disposing - but again, maybe £40?

I think you'd be best getting another quotejust to set your mind at ease - choose a local, independent retailer - we rock! And be sure to compare like for like - take the sample in of what your first quote is based on.

PassTheTwiglets · 21/03/2011 14:00

Mrs Sharp, thanks so much for that! (and yes, the hall isn't being done, just landing and stairs). They've charged an extra £20 for stair surcharge, £65 for normal fitting, £90 for gripper rods/door bars, £10 delivery and underlay is £125.

What's a stock carpet?

Also, I've just looked at the estimate and if I've done the sumes right, the total area is 20sq mt, so maybe that sounds ok if you thought £450 for 12 sq mt? (actually, if my maths is right, that's the same price).

Sorry, stock carpet is what carpets they actually hold in stock (in their warehouse). Some retailers buy rolls of carpet (at a reduced price) to sell to their customers and can pass on the discount. It costs more for a retailer to order a carpet in from the manufacturer at a cut length price rather than buy in bulk. Usually stock carpets are plain, beigey coloured carpets - the ones that will appeal to most customers, so may not suit anyway.

Have you picked a plain or patterned carpet? That would affect the amount of carpet you need to order, due to pattern matching etc.

In terms of pricing - all looks okay, other than the charges for metals and gripperods. For your info - we charge £6 per doorbar (normal metal ones) and £1.15 per. lin. mt. for gripperods. You shouldn't need to replace the gripperods, so unless you don't have them at the moment - I'd query why they are charging so much for grips.

I'd get another quote, though. Just to compare.

Out of interest - is the quote from a local independent retailer? We don't charge for delivery because we feel it's cheeky as you're going to be sending a guy over in a van to do the job anyway! I'd be interested to see if other small local firms are copying the sales tricks of the likes of CarpetRight etc.

PassTheTwiglets · 21/03/2011 16:20

Mrs Sharp, you are truly a star! Your company isn't in the South East, are you? :)

What we need is a plain, beige carpet, but I really want an 80/20 wool one and aren't all those ones on rolls synthetic carpets? We dont' have any gripper rods at the moment. This quote was from Carpets4Less. I will have a look around to find an independent retailer, thanks for that tip. I didnt like CarpetRight at all - the guy was clearly just trying to sell me anything and a lot of what he said was just rubbish!

Unfortunately not, we're in the Midlands. Our fitters travel, but not that far!

It depends on the retailer I suppose, but our stock is always a mix of some 80/20 wool twist and some polyprop carpets.

Steer well clear of CarpetRight! You will find that most independent retailers can beat CarpetRight hands down on like for like quotes, unless it's with their loss leader £2.99 rubbishy carpets. But then most reputable retailers won't touch that stuff anyway - not worth the damage to our reputation when your carpet likes like a rag in 6 months time!

grumpypants · 21/03/2011 17:15

We have a lovely floor which I am sure was Carpetright! I did get good service from an independent too - prob depends on the shop?

myermay · 21/03/2011 17:16

passhetwiglets, where in the south east are you?? my husband is a carpet fitter and if you're local to us, surrey/hants i'm sure he'd give you a quote. He works for various small shops and himself.

PassTheTwiglets · 21/03/2011 18:47

We're in North Essex, so a long way from you, myermay - thanks anyway!
