House is a tip - anyone fancy joining me in a big tidy up?

Not all at my house, obviously :o

Am going to embark on a major declutter and tidy up as another thread made me realise I'm sick of living like this and can't expect anyone else to sort it but me!

If there's anyone else out there in the same boat thought we could encourge each other...oh, and I'm not ready for flylady yet, need to actually clear out some stuff first.

stick thanks for that post. I am in a small 2 bed apartment so small like your home.

My main problem is DC can drag toys and scatter them around in no time but because they all go in different trays or boxes, takes me ages to tidy away. Lego in one, toy cooking in another etc.

DS also is into throwing atm Angry
so working on that, but for now it's moving furniture and gathering them all. Drives me crazy because I can spend all the time he is napping, tidying and half an hour after playing it is the same as before I started.

I am having a harder day than usual today though as it is raining, so stuck in with 2 DC under the age of 4. So far done painting with all the cleaning involved in that. Tidied/tidyed (can't work out which is right!) all the toys 3 times and read endless amounts of books.
Is it bedtime yet? ,

Oh well tomorrow is baby group so thay should be tired out after that and watch a dvd or do colouring in the afternoon so I can start on the house!

Stickwithit · 18/03/2011 17:00

Micky- just a thought: would it take you longer to tidy the toys if you left it until the end of the day and did it just once rather than several times during the day?! I know this won't work with really messy stuff like painting but it might work with other things?

It might be worth seeing if your DCs would help you tidy up, or put some things away before getting others out. Admittedly, I have not had much luck getting DS to do this. He is only willing to help if I tell him its either bedtime or tidytime- he will do anything to go to bed 5 minutes later!!

Failing that rest assured that the leaving a trail of destruction phase does pass. Or so I am told!!

MickyLee · 18/03/2011 17:17

I do leave the toys until the end of the night quite alot TBH.. otherwise I would go crazy. But those are the days I manage to recieve unexpected visitors Blush

You are right though on encouraging DC to tidy away inbeween: DD would if I asked her but because DS is naughty too young, DD ends up with it all.

Must start training them now though even if it me helping out mostly

JetLi · 18/03/2011 18:09

I'm invoking the following rules this weekend:

  • If a tea towel is tatty, got burn marks on, holes in it, then bin it.
  • Socks with holes - bin on sight.
  • Greying, threadbare, otherwise tatty flannels - ditto.

Its a start... There is a charity shop within walking distance now. I'm going to try & go twice a week, with the pram and just a few bits & pieces.

I drive past a shoe bin thing 5 times a week in a pub car park - no reason not to drop in periodically & ditch some old shoes.

leeloo1 · 18/03/2011 19:13

I need this thread, as on Monday I have an estate agent coming round to give me a valuation/advise on work needing to be done. (ARGH!) I know the mess won't really affect the asking price he suggests, but I think if it looks spotless it might help a bit? Confused

JetLi - snap, a charity shop has just opened near me as well, so I'm going to try to pop in a couple of times a week to get rid of more junk!

I've just hoovered downstairs and have ditched some junk in a few clutter hotspots in the kitchen (microwave was a health hazard with so much stuff dumped on top of it!), but I still have lots to do. :(

greensnail · 18/03/2011 19:28

mickylee I also have two little ones (2 under 3) who cause distruction and it takes ages to clear up their toys. I did manage to get DD1 to help me clear up toys this evening though which means much less for me to do now.

Haven't managed to do much else though due to grumpy, itchy DD2 needing lots of attention. Must make an effor to take stuff to charity shops next week too.

beijingaling · 19/03/2011 04:45

Ohhhhh I'm joining you! Yesterday I:

Went through the bathroom and my makeup bag. The makeup bag was a shocker - stuff that was 10 years old and made my eyes sting the last time I wore it yet still put back in the cupboard Hmm Also binned everything I dont wear.

Also went through my clothes and hand bags. All my pregnancy clothing, smart clothes (hardly going to go for big night out with 10w DD) and things I'm currently too fat for went into our storage trunk which I went through on Thursday. Got rid of lots too.

Everything unwanted goes to my ayi for her to bin, sell, keep, give away or sell to the ragman as she sees fit.

Today I need to go through my jumpers & underwear and do the same.

Job after this is the nursery then the study. My dad is coming to visit on April 4th so everything must be done by then.

Daisydreamer · 19/03/2011 07:33

Morning all!

Sounds like good starts all round. It's a good idea to actually get stuff out of the house. I tend to sort stuff into piles for charity shop etc then not take them so it all gradually assimilates itself back into the rest of the clutter!

May not be able to post much today but I plan to tidy kitchen up after each meal, put a load of washing on then tackle the clean clothes pile in preparation for wardrobe sorting on Monday :)

As well as homework, entertaining dc's etc as dh is working!

Oh, and decided every time I leave a room will do somethingto make it tidier like clearing the recycling out, or puting toys away.

Little and often!!

I need to. But I'm daunted and scared to start. DD is poorly on the sofa so we can't go out so a good chance to get some stuff done. Will have breakfast and then do dining room.

LilllyLovesLife · 19/03/2011 09:58

Can I join you? I just have far too much stuff really so it's mostly a de-cluttering mission, that feels never ending! I'm getting much better though and I have much less stuff than this time last year. But still a long way to go. I might be moving house next year so I want to keep cutting down on stuff till then really so I have a lot less to move.

I have real motivation problems!

SupersonicDave · 19/03/2011 10:05

Can i join the wardrobe sort out on monday? I have to sort out the maternity clothes for friend (DS is now 7m - today ) Blush

My house is a tip, and i am tidying (kind of) well, i had a good start, will get going again once the dishy and washing machine have finished.

ariane5 · 19/03/2011 10:17

i need to join this too i think! my house is an absolute tip. Iam a hoarder and tend to keep all sorts of junk 'just in case i need it one day'!

every surface has paperwork on it, nearly every drawer is full. If i open my wardrobe everything falls out.i have about fifty million toys in each room and under my stairs is a dumping ground.

I did de clutter my kitchen yesterday and threw away 2 bin bags full of absolute rubbish, old lightbulbs, bits of paper, tissues, old plastic cups and beakers and lots of other rubbish.

Today i am going to try and do my shredding as have about 3 years worth of paperwork to get rid of and then i have to tackle my washing mountain!

bilblio · 19/03/2011 14:22

I've had a very lazy morning, but eventually DH and I got around to going shopping. The kitchen looks much tidier as a result as we have dishwasher tablets again.

I've decided since I have a child free day I'm going to do Fun tidying. The boring stuff can wait till the week when DD is in nursery for the morning.

So, our Welsh dresser is where I keep all my card making stuff. DD thinks it's an Aladdin's Cave. My view of her getting in there is it's like Pandora's box.
So I'm going to sort it out, make things easier for me to find, but also easier for me to quickly lay my hands on the tools and less expensive things that I'm happy for DD to use.
I'm then going to spend the rest of the day making stuff :o ... and doing washing. :(

greensnail · 19/03/2011 21:07

Managed to hoover and mop all the floors this morning. DVDs have been sorted through this afternoon and we have a big pile to get rid of. Must remember to actually get rid of them before DD1 redistributes them.

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 19/03/2011 21:26

I'm so glad i found this thread. flylady threads scare me ...

as the lighter nights are arriving, i've decided to have a go at de-cluttering. Our garage is still full of boxes of unknown junk since our house move nearly a year ago!!!

and i have loads of ds' baby stuff to get rid of (he's 4.10, time to LET GO). I actually took a load to a nearly new sale recently but only a few things sold and its ages till the next one, bah.

also have years of paperwork and 2 "crap" drawers in the kitchen that barely close now.

Living room, dining room and our bedroom are ok actually tho could probably do a wardrobe clearout since i lost weight.

onwards and upwards ladies!

beijingaling · 19/03/2011 21:40

DH home tomorrow so I'm finally going to put up all the pictures I've had framed. Lots of washing to do too as DH has just come home from a trip.

MickyLee · 20/03/2011 08:15

Good Morning all.

Was out all day yesterday so didn't do anything :(

Going to have a good tidy up in general today so I can see what really needs doing.

Will check in later and report my progress....

Gracie123 · 20/03/2011 09:36

Morning all. I've unloaded/reloaded the dishwasher.

Poor start so far, but at least a start.

I plan to defrost and reorganise the freezer today, so rest of house will have to wait a bit. I did reorganise and clean fridge out yesterday and it looks half empty now that things have been put in neatly Blush

beijingaling · 21/03/2011 08:24

Well nothing got done yesterday and nothing again today. Hoping to get DD down for a nap now though. If she does I'll have a quick whiz around downstairs and then try to get on with organizing jumpers.

bilblio · 21/03/2011 10:58

I have an hour before DD needs collecting from nursery.
Kitchen and living room have been tidied... but I need to get off MN and Sweep and Mop!
I'm going... honest...

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 23/03/2011 23:43

have had a busy week with loads of appts, parties for ds etc but i have friday morning free while he is at nursery so plan to get at least one big bag of stuff sorted and off to the charity shop!
