Freezer in Garage

Not sure if this is the correct board to post this question on, but here goes anyway. I have a spare fridge/freezer in my garage that stops working when the temperature plummets below zero. I know why this is and it's because the freezer is controlled by the thermostat in the fridge.

So, I want to get rid of it and replace it with just a freezer. Question is, do I need a small chest freezer or can I buy a freezer with drawers instead? Basically, what type of freezer do you have in your garage and does it keep working in the depths of winter?

TIA

My mum has a chest freezer in their garage. It survives the Newcastle winters and given they had snow/ ice that didn't melt every day for a month I think temperature isn't a problem for their one.

HTH :)

i have an under-the-worktop size freezer in the garage with 3 drawers and it has worked absolutely fine all winter despite the bitter cold. It was only a cheap one too Smile

We recently purchased a chest freezer for the garage. Within the spec of modern freezers is a temperature range that they work so you can ensure that you get a freezer that will suit.

We bought ours a couple of years ago. Some makes/models specifically state they are suitable for use in garages (for the reason you mention). Ours is Beko, can't rememmber which model but it is an upright, with drawers

Thanks everyone. Have looked at Comet website and there seems to be a universal disclaimer regarding putting any freezer in the garage due to extreme temps. But almost everyone has a freezer out there? How, I wonder!

Hi thuckingsumbs

Unfortunately, as we are unable to control outside temperatures, most manufacturers do not recommend that large electrical appliances are kept in out buildings such as garages. They do however, stipulate in the manual the ambient temperatures of which the product will work. In instances such as this if the product is in an out building and stops working this will not be covered under the manufacturers guarantee.

We do however, sell certain Beko models that that can be stores in these environments and again although we cannot fully guarantee that no matter what the temperature drops to they will continue to work, these products will work under lower temp than normal refrigeration products. If you check the technical specifications of the models on our website, the minimum ambient operating temperature is provided.

Personally I do have a chest freezer in my garage that is not recommended, but have had no problems with it in the cold weather. The issue here is we just cannot guarantee it will not stop working and neither will the manufacturers.

I hope this helps

Chris from Comet.
