Bleach on stainless steel taps!!! :O

Ok so my effinidiot helpful DP has tried to clean by pouring bleach everywhere and has totally ruined all our taps and plugs (ie. bath not electrical). As we're renting this has to be fixed but I have no idea what to do! Anyone have any idea if it can be rectified or do I need to replace them all?

Also, is it fairly common knowledge that this is a stupid thing to do as he is now sulking saying that no one knows this?

I did the same thing and had no idea that the damage would be so bad.

I tried Maas cream on them and it improved them 100% but he might have to do it a few times to get them looking almost as good as new.

He will get Maas cream in Lakeland. Only a tiny amount is needed.

Right i'm off the Lakeland, thanks MaryDances!

What does bleach do to stainless steel?

MaryDancesTheTango · 17/03/2011 13:33

It removes the shineyness in a mottled sort of way. I think it must remove some of the metal.

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/03/2011 14:59

I didn't know bleach did that, but then you disinfect with bleach not clean grime off that's what multisurface cleaner is for.

If we have a son I'm going to teach them to clean, my dh wasn't expected to clean but his younger sister was. Guess who's messy and who's not...

I clean my sink and taps with bleach every day - never had any problems! Never heard of this before. Hope you can fix it.

MaryDancesTheTango · 17/03/2011 19:04

The bleach I used was the heavy duty limescale killing one. Aka the tap killer. Sad

Only a little on a cloth which I had cleaned the bath with but enough to damage the metal.

kbaby · 17/03/2011 20:50

I always fill our sink with bleach diluted with water to get rid of The stains. Oops

mrsjaja · 18/03/2011 11:20

Me too Kbaby........

BelieveInLife · 18/03/2011 12:57

And me...really didn't know this! Must stop - lesson learned - thanks!

Butterbur · 18/03/2011 13:01

Is it the limescale killing part that does the damage, rather than the bleach? I wrecked ours by putting toilet limescale remover round them (it didn't contain bleach).

Am now off to buy Maas cream.

Can you purchase any type of plughole that doesn't get ruined with bleach?

e1y1 · 30/12/2016 11:32

For anyone interested, you can use bleach to clean stainless steel, but not too much and it MUST repeat MUST be all rinsed off with fresh water.

I have made the mistake of ruining stainless steel with bleach, but since rinsing well, never had an issue.

Hope you get it fixed op.

spaceodyssey · 30/12/2016 13:38

I would give this cleaner a try, it's one of the best stainless cleaner I've used in the past and it's really good at removing bleach.
