OMG I'm cleaning the oven!

I'm slightly bemused as to why I felt the need to do it as I'm 35 and have never cleaned one before (beyond wiping down the hob), but having read so many threads on here I suddenly felt the urge to buy a box of ovenpride (I think) today and the oven is currently marinading in some noxious goo! I put the top plate-y bits that go round the burners in the bag that came with it with more of the goo - which started off clear and is now dark brown, which I am hoping is a 'good thing'!

Am I now officially a grown up and (more worryingly) having done this once will I feel the urge/need to do it again - and if so how often?

I feel the need to lie down to contemplate the peculiar turn life has taken...

It's like an epiphany using Oven Pride for the first time Grin. Just make sure that the bag doesn't split and leak ucky goo over something important. And enjoy...

leeloo1 · 14/03/2011 19:40

:) Really hoping the bag doesn't leak as its looking increasingly manky in there!

I just unscrewed the glass from the doors to wipe it down more easily and it went from black/streaky/crusty to clear! I never knew it was clear glass, I assumed it was tinted. Blush In my defense we inherited the oven so I never saw it when it was new... actually that probably just means I should have cleaned it when we moved in... Blush and grin]

Hahaha! I've also been inspired by the current threads and cleaned mine this week-end. It's perfect and I'm feeling rather pleased with myself!

leeloo1 · 14/03/2011 20:36

Well done JojoLapin. We'll be buying steam mops next. Wink

ps I pointed out the sparkly cleanliness of the glass to DH just now and he said 'what colour was it before?' Hmm

I still do not know what steam mops are. I'm going to google it right now. Such a buzz about those.... Makes you wonder the things we are missing out on... :-)

jenniferturkington · 14/03/2011 21:24

I did mine last week. I'm 30 and it was my first time too. I was very proud [preen]

TragicallyHip · 14/03/2011 21:29

How have you waited till you are 35 to clean an oven? Shock

JojoLapin · 14/03/2011 21:48

I am in team Leelo1, I do not remember how old I was but it also took me a while (and yet the rest of the house has always been in good order). I always saw it as the most mundane thing to do and simply had better things to do.

TragicallyHip · 14/03/2011 21:57

It's not that I've ever wanted too, I've had too!

leeloo1 · 15/03/2011 00:21

I'm glad I'm not the only one who is late to discover the joys of oven cleaning. :)

Blush TragicallyHip I guess I was wasting time on mumsnet doing far more exciting things. Also, I don't often use the oven-y bit, mostly grill/use the hob (making myself sound less domesticated by the minute here!) and prior to inheriting this cooker we had an electric one which seemed to get less messy - also it was white, so I guess I wiped the surface over more often, this one is black-ish enamel (I think, unless wiping off the rest of the goo in the morning reveals a different colour under the gunge!) so didn't really show the dirt. Blush Finally, in my defense, I don't feel 35! :)

JojoLapin very excited I have a team. :)

I know someone who religiously dismantels and cleans her oven every Sunday Shock

Me - mine has just been cleaned for the first time in four years by a man that can (it was not that dirty though) - far more exciting things to be doing imo Wink

MillsAndDoom · 15/03/2011 10:41

ok I give in and I've added ovenpride to my order

Bearcat · 15/03/2011 20:53

We had a card through the door from a polish man offering to clean our cooker. He's been twice in the last 18 months and the oven looks like brand new by the time he's finished with his chemicals.
Costs about £30 I think, but I just know I wouldn't do it myself!

leeloo1 · 15/03/2011 21:30

MillsAndDoom :) Well, done you'll soon be admiring the shiny loveliness of your own cooker.

Lillyofthevalley Every Sunday??? Doesn't she have anything better to do? She needs to do hers one week and then alternate doing yours and other friends' on the alternate weeks.

Bearcat Sorry, thats cheating! Wink For a bargain £3.50 you could do it all yourself. I'm feeling like I should be on commision now!

Well, having finished wiping all the goo off earlier today I'm really impressed with the oven pride stuff, as its worked wonders! The whole cooker now looks impressively clean and shiny - practically like new. My plan now is to never use it again so it stays looking lovely. Grin

I hate the job and thats why after every oven job I give it a once over with a hot soapy cloth cleaning the inside of the door and wiping over the shelves while still warm.. then give it a fully clean once a months..

MrsSharp · 17/03/2011 13:18

I've just been cleaning my oven with OvenPride. I got a bit in my hair, and didn't realise. Went to wash it out when I noticed it was a bit crusty - and the hair just came out in my hand!!! Shock I was wearing rubber gloves, but also got a bit of a chemical burn on my arm. I was obviously really giving it some welly! Just remember to tie your hair up if your going to tackle your oven Grin
