Older house, condensation, chickens and a cough...

Hi, last April we moved from one of our landlords houses to a bigger but older property. I had been in the previous one for 5 years, it had been built around 1980 and had hot air heating... We moved to a 3 bed house built around 1920's that has central heating, double glazing and to be honest hasnt been maintained as well as it should have been - we have had leaks from bathroom fixed, parts of the roof fixed and what we thought was damp but probably condensation in both kids bedrooms over the winter...

Last summer I also got 3 chickens in a wooden coop for which I am soley responsible...

The neighbours drain frequently overflows across our drive and I have complained at least 10 times to them about that...

I am asthmatic (take flixotide, seretide and ventolon along with hayfever meds) and I have had a cough for 3 months, had 3 lots of antibiotics and am now on more with prednisoline... Dd (15 months) has had colds and a cough on and off through winter, ds (11) has had a cough on and off for a month and dh was off work last week with a cough...

Dh hates the house and reckons that all our coughs are because of the house, how likely is that? I am not sure and perhaps think it's just bad luck/crazy weather...

But... If it is the house, any ideas how we can find out and what could I do to reduce the impact?

Are you thinking it might be the chickens then?

I'm not sure.... Has anyone else had problems with chickens and coughs?

Condensation can cause mould to grow which some people can be very allergic to. Could it be that? We had a condensation problem in our bedroom which caused mould. I can tell that it's there even when we can't see it because I get horrible hayfever-like symptoms. I think it can cause other respitory problems so I wonder if that include coughs.

If it is that, washing the mould off with a bleach solution and good ventilation should sort it out.

I hate to say it... But the house might very well be the problem, especially if it's damp. They used horsehair in some of the plasterwork in old houses and it lets off spores if it's damp.

Try some dehumidifiers...

I lived in a damp house which made my asthma bad, I'm pretty certain it was the mould spores as it was fine one I'd moved out
