If money were no object what vacuum would you buy?

That has to be good on carpet/tiles/wooden floor, and has to be an upright. Oh yes and we have a hairy cat and a hairy dog.

I say has to be an upright as I am struggling with my wrists with a pull along dyson (and the fact that I have to empty it constantly as it is a compact one). I say money no object as I will save for it, but it has to be the dogs bollocks if I am going to have the inclination to really save for it AND it will have to be a really long lasting one too!

I am looking forward to finding out which ones you think are good

(Also it doesn't have to go up stairs necessarily!)

l have a sebo cylinder, and would just advise to check the cost of bags and filters. Mine are £12 for 8 bags and £16 for the filters which need to be changed for every three boxes of bags (24). They are slightly cheaper on ebay.

But with two kids, two cats and a mixture of wooden and carpet flooring in an old victorian terrace l am getting through bags at quite a speed.

Vacuum shop advised sebo based on guarantee and solid design, however the head gets clogged with hair and dust weekly and needs to be dismantled and cleaned. Wish l had gone with another dyson, had an upright DC04 for 10 years and it never went wrong - only when it finally died Smile

I would buy a Henry/Hetty. Or a Dyson, but not the ballone, I pushed it around in Tesco the other day and didnt like it at all :)

Heroine · 14/03/2011 10:53

Henry - no not upright but why push the motor back and forth rather than just the tube? really robust, nearly indestructible, spare parts easy to get, much much quieter than a dyson. Really long flex - great.

diddl · 14/03/2011 16:32

I´ve also got a Miele & it does seem superior to others I´ve had.

But if money really was not object-I´d just let the staff chooseGrin

BoffinMum · 15/03/2011 22:52

Miele with a turbo attachment. Practically self-operating.

or Roomba.

Sebos are too heavy.

Figgyrolls · 15/03/2011 22:57

Purchased the Miele cat and dog today and am most excited!

Good choice:) I love mine.

wishingchair · 16/03/2011 19:04

Interesting ... I spend £20 a week on a cleaner for 2 hours each week. She basically does floors, kitchen, bathrooms. That's £1000 per year (roughly). I could get a Roomba and a Scooba for about £800 and just do the bathrooms and kitchen myself. Hmmm ...

But would dog and cat go crazy????

wishingchair · 16/03/2011 19:05

Dog is a labrador. A young labrador.

sharbie · 16/03/2011 19:08

miele didn't work on our lab hair - dyson does

Skifit · 16/03/2011 19:14

the best, and the house maid would order it.....

Figgyrolls · 16/03/2011 20:56

Sharbie, our dyson doesn't work on the lab hair but that could be the carpet as it seems a bit velcro like. However I am hoping that the fact that this has differing suck modes (ooh er mrs!) and has a quiet mode too. I love the fact that the one I bought has two different heads for different floorings (which the dyson doesn't - it is he best currently scratching its way across the wooden floor!) but then I don't think I have the best dyson going and the collection bit fills in each room - or the ones with new carpet in - and it is quite frankly driving me bonkers (and emptying it is putting dust everywhere too Sad. I did decide to get the pull along as opposed to the upright due to weight.

However I shall not be getting rid of the dyson [greedy emoticon] as I am sure it will be more than useful but wanted a change (besides the miele was £50 cheaper than online AND £100 cheaper than a new dyson so it was a cost saving Hmm)

I did want the roomba, but I was a bit worried about it falling downstairs and the fact that actually it was vvv expensive (but its not totally off the radar.........Grin)

I can't wait to pick it up - it should have arrived today but I didn't have time to rush to JL so I haven't used it yet!

only got wooden floors and use one of the flat things where the oose sticks to it. and a brush. easy peasy and cheap..

kylesmybaby · 17/03/2011 12:26

i have got the miele cat and dog and its fantastic.

it comes with different floor tools. one is fantastic for carpet and cleans like no other ive used.

i dont use the miele bags as too expensive but they are just the same style that are cheaper from amazon/ebay etc.

cheesesarnie · 17/03/2011 12:35

i have the miele cat and dog.i love it,its really powerful.

wishingchair · 17/03/2011 12:47

I have the miele cat and dog but find it's not brilliant on our carpets. My brother brought his new vax over and it got loads of dust out of them and the carpets had just been hoovered with the miele.

The roomba doesn't fall down stairs due to its clever don't fall down stairs technology!

But suspect the dog might chew it to pieces.

JetLi · 17/03/2011 14:12

Oreck - Mum has one & it is the dog's

I have a Miele & a Dyson & the Oreck kicks both their arses TBH

anniepanniepears · 17/03/2011 14:14

Sebo it a German make brilliant for pet hair

BendyBob · 17/03/2011 14:19

I think I'd have Sebo next. My mum has one and it v good and lightweight. Also has a v long hose which stretches right up the stairs.

Also equally interested in Orecks too though. I've heard excellent things about them too.

I think the key to choosing a good cleaner must surely be to buy whatever they use in hotels.

My Dyson is old. It's ok but SO heavy and clunky to use.

Figgyrolls · 17/03/2011 14:19

The only oreck in JL was huge so didn't actually look at it, am I going to kick myself?

Let me know what those bags were on amazon as I think we might need some and prefer to have on hand than go out and buy the most pricey because I need them!

I have a Sebo, I keep it upstairs.

It is a great machine and used to be my most beloved Sebo, and then I was chosen on here about a year ago to roadtest a Dyson.

This One

It is wonderful, it is fast and nippy and has great suction.

Now before you all think I am in the pay of Dyson, I fully intended road testing it and giving it to my Mother. ............ She is still waiting... Grin

JetLi · 17/03/2011 14:34

If you go for the Oreck OP, try QVC - you have a 30 day money back guarantee so you can properly try it out at home for a month & then return it if it doesn't suit. They are very lightweight, which is good because they have almighty suction.

The Oreck website is good to sign up to as well.

PustyRussell · 18/03/2011 09:29

I would get a Vorwerk.

www.vkdirect.co.uk/kobold_140.html

you can even wear it on your back like a back pack to hoover curtains, stairs etc. It is really light too and has different suction settings.

Heroine · 20/03/2011 18:39

interesting - but rubbish! weak and kind of pointless that one - good perhaps for a second hoover - one for upstairs maybe. I still think you are all getting dazzled and should buy a henry - they honestly are the best cleaners - and they have indestructable buttons and a really really long power cord. Get it a nice outfit if you are dazzled by bling but if you want a hoover that does its job and won't break if you drop it down the stairs (yes.. I have!!) then get a henry!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/03/2011 20:58

I'm going to get a henry next. We have a 2 yeard old vax and need to replace the filters but we are really struggling to find them. Going to call them tomorrow and ask. One of our biulders had a henry with him and the bits of carpet he hoovered looked far better than when I do them.
